How does the Electronic Flight bag System work with the 777 is it basically a database of charts and checklists. A lot of Boeing fanatics have told me how amazing this thing is when its a computer full of charts can anyone explain what it really is ?
Its a lot more than just a database. Its basically a GUI based around a number of present Boeing/Jeppesen products. Crews will have the ability to access JEPPVIEW for charts, Boeing Laptop tool for Takeoff Performance. This is combined with some new systems which will have cameras either inside or outside the aircraft. The abilty to display Flight Manuals, Operations Manuals and company manuals. The system will also be able to plot the aircrafts position on an aerodrome chart for a number of airports. Finally its written in an open language so airlines will be able to add any function that they desire.
While the initial systems were installed in B777s, it will be available for all Boeing aircraft if the money is right.
The Boeing Airliner magazine had an article on it a couple of months ago, you should be able to find it on-line.
