Just wondered if any Captains can say what are the common errors that new 'low houred' FO's usually encounter when flying a jet for the first time??

yep, - some ofthem believe they have a first choice when crewmeal is served.
They are wrong, and af course they will be politely corrected

More seriously, there is sometimes a slight reluctance to use speedbrake when trying to control speed/descent. If the flight manual allows unrestricted use then by all means gently pull the handle to full extent and keep it there until you are happy all is under control. Then slowly stow it to avoid a sudden pitch bump and keep monitoring the flight path.
Even if you are new to jets don't hestitate to speak up if you are unsure about something.
