HOLLY GROVE, Va. -- Federal aviation officials Sunday visited the scene of a single-engine plane crash in Louisa County that left two people dead.

The plane crashed at about 4:20 p.m. Saturday shortly after takeoff from an airport in Holly Grove, where it had stopped to refuel, said state police spokesman Sgt. Dave Chewning. The plane crashed less than five miles from the airport, near Route 522 in the southern part of the county.

The plane had taken off from Warrenton before stopping to refuel.

Chewning identified the dead Sunday as pilot Michael Alfred Moulds, 58, of Leesburg, and passenger Richard Allen Pendergist, 59, of Falls Church.

The cause of the crash is unknown. A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday that after its investigators determine the plane is an "ultralight," or not a large aircraft, the case will likely be turned over to local authorities.
