Use Of Springs

Hi everone, for my aeropace lecture notes, I have to list four applications where springs are used in aircraft? Anyone able to provide some applications?

In the mechanism of an air speed indicator would be one.

In the Oleos possibly.

In the seat belt mechanism.

You also forgot that spring's are also sometimes used in control run's to introduce feel into the system.

A few that spring to mind...

- Artificial pitch feel, normally in a fixed wing aircraft with good stick-free LSS but inadequate stick-fixed LSS. Obvious example, PA31

- Throttle return mechanism in carburettor - anything with a Rotax engine and conventional Bing carburettor (as opposed to a diaphragm carb).

- Return spring for a high friction single cable pitch trimmer / trim tab. Obvious example Reality / Just Aircraft Escapade.

- Push-down spring for sliding seat mechanism locking pin. Obvious example, any high wing Cessna.

- Door catches on most light aircraft

- Spring-bungee in undercarriage mechanism. Obvious example, Piper Cub (and it's many copies).

- Projecting the parachute drogue from a personal parachute - any aircraft using personal parachutes (as opposed to an ejection seat or BRS).

- Within the engine bay, wrapped around fuel hose to protect them from chafing.

In the control lines to the tailwheel of a tailwheel aircraft

The tailwheel mounting bracket or tail skid (not a coiled spring, but a spring all the same.

The control spring in a propellor govenor

The spring in a propellor hub

The springs on camlocks and quarter turns

Springs used to hold lightbulbs in place in bayonet fittings

The springiness of the ELT antenna

The tensionning springs used in an ADF sense antenna

Bungee cords used as trim control in sailplanes

Bungee cords used as undercarriage tensionners in a Piper Cub.

Spring in a yoke clip/kneeboard.

ummmm, maybe I missed it earlier, but the main gear of most single-engine Cessnas (and a few other types) is one Big spring. :cool:

Choke return spring on my Rotax.

Lift relief spring for retraction on my U/c,

O/centre locks retention on my U/carriage.
