Ive known it happen once but the other way round. A TP was seconded to engineering for a while to help with a large project, mainly on the HMI side of things for the cockpit displays.
However the difficulty arises when your engineering department head is trying to schedule resource/work and you keep having to disappear off for a week or so, presumably at fairly short notice. He might get a little peed off.
All I can suggest is that you write to the HR department and explain your situation and requests and just take it from there.
