Hurn airport 1970s Tom Owton

Iím just trying to track down any sort of history of my Dad who did his PPL at Hurn airport in the 1970s. His name was Tom Owton and at that time he wouldíve been in his 30s. Iíve attached one of the only my photos I have of him flying and have been told that the colours of that aircraft are oxford colours but he definitely learnt to fly in Bournemouth in a piper 28.
I have been in touch with the archives department at Bournemouth but they didnít have any logs that far back.
Iíd appreciate it if anyone has any information, any instructors that might have taught him, or could point in the direction of any other contacts.

Hi, Not sure how useful this will be . . .

Sorry, I did not know Tom.

I to learned to fly at Hurn way back then but with one of the "other lot" (F/Lt R L Beverley - Bob flying GATKY a Cessna 150 with the Danebury Flying Group on the northside)

There were also two flying schools operating from a couple of old buildings located where the current terminal/stands are and just a short stroll from the Tower . . those were the days !! Cannon Aviation School of Flying operated Piper aircraft, all of which I flew at some point over the period '71 till '74 . . well it was very close to work (ATC College)

Having checked my own Log Book ( and G-INFO on CAA www site . . see below)
It was common for the main importers to use their brand new aircraft all painted up in CSE Training colours for about 3 years before selling them on.
New owners would then change the paint job as required/desired or needed at some point in the future but many remained in CSE colours for a long time.
I to purchased a Tomahawk PA38 many years later and had many a good mission in her . . . all in CSE colours !

Ex CSE aircraft used by Cannon at Hurn between 1971 and 1974, which I have flown . . (there may well be others)
Do you have your Dad's Log Book ?

GAVLR . . . Nov'71 to Jun'75
GATJF . . . Jul'69 to May'75
GAXTH . . . Aug'72 to May'75
GAXIO . . . Oct'73 to May'75
GAVYS . . . Aug'73 to May'75 PA28R Nice aeroplane !
(They also had GATJD but that was Ex Air Gregory)
As to the instructors (from Log Book)
'71 Mullins ?? initial Check
'73 Ian Moorman Check ride
'74 Boot PA28- 180R Conversion/Check

So there you have it . . . almost proven !
