It's some years since I did an IR renewal with Captain Thurston. It was a thoroughly interesting and educational experience.
Happy birthday!

I have never met Eric Thurston, but in my plane spotting youth in the late 1950's I spent a lot of time at Stapleford (probably too much) and he would often sweep into the airfield in his large car (I think it might have been a Bentley) early in the morning.

At the time he had an immaculate red and white Gemini and Auster based there which I did manage to photograph. Sadly, his Tawney Owl was not so immaculate after it's one and only attempt to get airborne

Congratulations to him and I hope he makes his 100

I thought for a horrible second when I saw the title he had died. Happy Birthday Eric! An absolute gent and I had the pleasure of meeting him when I flew Thurston Aviation's HS 125 from Stansted in the early 1980s.

I did my PA30 type rating with Eric in July 73. He gave me a simulated engine fail on shortish final to keep me on the ball. Before that I did my first IR in the Apache. Susan Eastbury (as was) was one of the instructors then. A good bloke, I must know him quite well!

I understand from someone who worked at Thurston Aviation that his Bentley's number plate was ET21. E T for his initials, 21 for his inside leg. No offence meant, just passing it on!

Happy Birthday!
I well remember what happened over Clacton decades ago one cold and dank winter afternoon on an IR renewal when the VOR really did go u/s halfway round the hold.

Eric Thurston

Captain Eric Thurston will be 100 years old on 22nd August and to celebrate he is going to take to the sky again in a Cessna 172 ( P2?) This will be at Stapleford in the afternoon sometime around 3pm or after. There will then be a presentation of Eric's life and times. Not too long ! There will be Eric's log books and memorabilia of a life in Aviation. Stapleford are this year celebrating 50 years as a flying club and Eric and Stapleford will be pleased to receive any visitors who would like to help make this a wonderful event.

I First Solo’d at SFC in a yellow Condor on my 17th Birthday (13th July 1972). 25,000 hours later, still flying. Will be there, I hope!

I also solo’d in a Condor February 1971 at SFC. chief instructor was Fiona Smith ( later to become Fiona Thorpe)
I remember Captain Thurston as a true gentleman of the old school. Did not realise that the flying club had only been going a couple of years when I started flying there. Perhaps it was formally known as The Herts and Essex Aero club.
I will certainly try and make the 100th birthday celebration
Well done Sir!
Meldrew.

Do you remember the Navajo that came down short of the threshold in the fog around ‘73? My first view of an aircraft wreck, it certainly made an impression on me (as did the Manchester 737 disaster interior, which I viewed at the AAIB many years later).

That’s great news about Eric’s 100th Birthday plans! I was an instructor at SFC in the 1990s....unfortunately I won’t be able to make it to Stapleford on the day, but if anyone could pm me an email address for him I’d really appreciate it. Would be great to pass on my best wishes on his big birthday!

Hey Nightstop, at least there’s one person out there who can eyeball Eric at the same level!

I’ll try to fly in - blissful memories of learning on the Condor in the long hot summer of ‘76, and instructing for 4 years in the ‘90s, and just the one “listening to” in all those years.

Ha, Rocket see you there (ETA?). My attendance is confirmed. I’ll be driving in on this occasion, unlike 1972 when I caught the train and bus because I was too young to drive.

Not sure, I’ll pop down from Andrewsfield in my Pup, assuming I don’t forget, which is always a distinct possibility these days.

I used to cycle there. Is Barry Robinson still with us? He did all my early lessons. All non radio, shouting in my right ear.... happy days.
