Rupert Aubrey-Cound

Just seen in the Telegraph the announcement of Rupert's death at the age of 87.

Flew with him many times on the F27 at Air UK in the eighties.. Believe he had been with BAF and he was previously in the RAF.

I remember him telling me that he joined the RAF after, as a junior Royal Artillery officer sitting frozen in a field, watching the RAF aircraft he was liaising with flying above him. 'That's got to be better than this' he thought and promptly applied to the RAF.

RIP Rupert.

He was still flying around in the F27 out of Norwich in 1990 by all accounts. That's an evocative photograph though, in the Telegraph, redolent of many qualities that today are as far over the horizon as the man's gaze. RIP indeed.

I knew Rupert when he was flying the Herald with Air Bridge Carriers. He was a most entertaining teller of stories. He was the F/O when his captain quite unexpectedly taxied across the grass to the ramp at Liverpool, and his account of this was most amusing. A very pleasant chap. RIP Rupert

According to the Telegraph, Rupert's wife has also died, just a couple of weeks after Rupert.

Sad, also a lovely person, like Rupert. Very sociable when we were in AUH.

I remember Rupert joining 152 squadron in Bahrain towards the end of 1960 after a spell as a Shackleton co-pilot. I had no idea he was six years older than me as he looked so young when I showed him our active Twin Pioneer strips in Oman and the Trucial States. Rupert was certainly a one off!

Sorry to hear about Rupert. I flew with him on the Vanguard in Air Bridge. Lovely guy.

The last time I heard him was on tuning in on the company frequency and hearing only the end of the conversation with him saying "...and tell ***** **** (ops manager) that my uniform will be in the post!"

They broke the mould.

I think that this might be the Rupert who used to call in at Old Buckenham for a chat and to visit a military vehicle restoration project. A fascinating gentleman RIP
