British Island Airways Reunion 2015

Please see the following website:

Although aimed primarily at the One-Eleven operation (1982-1990), there are people that go back to the days of the HP Herald so anyone from that era will be welcome!

Cool I remember too!

I remember all those names mentioned.. flew with nearly all of them in my time at BIA from 73 to 78, initially on Daks ,then the Fart Herald both at BPL and LGW! Blackpool, as you say was a full-time "Working Party". Some great times, but a slow way of accumulating the early-career precious flying hours, but it provided and established a solid grounding in the basics of airline flying procedures and flying 3 degree approaches! They became almost instinctive and one has to be grateful for the experience.

One or two of those names mentioned have now been re-united with their erstwhile colleagues,in the Great Hangar in the Sky....Who knows (except Himself) when we shall join them..I've been retired for over 12 years..it was a way of life that is perhaps unparalleled and without equal. Great days and memories! Best rearguards you guys and gals!! IP

Never having been in BIA I'm intruding here so do forgive me - but glad to see John Pothecary is still around. Nice man - as a 16 year old ATC Staff Cadet in 1962 I used to help push his Comper Swift and Robinson Redwing in/out of the hangar for him at the gliding school at Christchurch airfield (the Dorset one).

Hugh Uttridge

I do not know whether members of this forum are aware, but sadly I have to tell you that Hugh passed away at his home in Spain on September 1st. As many others have said, he was very much a courteous and old school gentleman, and though I did not fly with him in his airline days, we flew many times together during our stint in the CAA. I remember his great kindness when I joined the team, in pointing out the feet I should not tread upon, and those that were more forgiving. Rest in peace Hugh.

So sad to hear of "Uncle Hugh" no longer being with us. He became my mentor when I joined BIA in 1978 as a fresh-faced, wet-behind-the-ears sprog. He taught me precisely how to behave to colleagues - on the ground and in the air. That was with courtesy and respect, however lowly the job someone was doing.

When it became my turn to shift seats I modelled my Command on his - for the next 35 years.

RIP "Old Mate" - as he used to address me.

Hello Jacqui. What a delight to see your name appear. I trust all is well and that your pseudonym does not rellect reality!
With very best regards, Andy C.
