British Independent Airways - Lydd - 1989-1991

Interested to know how many ex British Independent Airways employees are still in the industry out there.

I used to work in the Ops and Commercial departments (Andy McGill) and after a recent visit to Lydd, wondered what had happened to everyone. One of the best companies of my career, great bunch of people and many laughs had. :-)

I know that the former finance director Peter?, who lived in Rye ended up in deep financial problems 3 or 4 years back and had to sell his house and land

How you doing Andy,

Great memories of BIA, great people and great fun. Far too enjoyable to look back at my time there as working ;-)

Never have managed to quit the industry, must be in the blood I guess, or no one else will have me, most prob the latter!

Now working in the Midlands where the airport approach roads do not have 'parking ditches' on the corners lol

All the best,
Dunc (BIA Ops)

Hi Duncan,
It's been a long time. I'll drop you a pm later.

Unfortunately I heard a few years back that Vince (Ops) had passed away. I'm still in touch with Ken Hilton every once in a while and as for Peter...I think Brookmans Park is referring to Peter Elwell.

I've no idea what happened to most of the flightdeck or cabin crew, though I thought I recognised Huw Hopkins in Newcastle at one time, when Gill Airways were still operating (must've been 12/13 years ago at least). I also bumped into Malcolm Stoodley a few years back at Stansted...think he was flying LHS for Ryanair at the time. I think Yvonne (CSM) went to Australia a few years back.

Drop me a pm and let me know who you're working for.

Just discovered this site

Ken Hilton here. Remember me?
Still have fond memories of British Independent, even though it cost me an awful lot of money!
We were so close to making it work with a Britih Rail London to Paris contract. 20 RTs a day.
Were let down at the lat minute by 'backers' who turned out to be con artists.
Hope you are all doing well.

Paul Henty

It has been a few years , but I was in contact with Paul Henty who died a few months after we made contact .He joined the RAF Boy entrants and we were under training aircraft engine mechanics. We completed our training in 1961 and we were posted from St Athan.
So it was to my surprise he surfaced a few years ago and he told me he had been a pilot with BIA. I was a station engineer with Dan Air from 78- 85 and during that time we did the engineering for BIA never came across him!
Does anyone remember Paul ? I was surprised that he gravitated to the flight deck.. but just coincidence I never ran into him at GWK!

Mike Magee checking in from Australia! Miss the BIA days and people

Wow, so good to have found this thread here!
I was at BIA until the end. Mike Magee, your Aussie connection! I worked with Maryanne, Big Barry and the rest of the reservations team. We had such a tight-knit team and I loved working with you all. Lee, Mo, Ken Hilton, Dunc!
So sad to see BIA go! I went to Dan Air, GB Airways, British Airways before moving back home to Melbourne in 2007. I fly at Virgin Australia and am also a Flight Instructor on the side. Would love to reconnect with any/all from BIA.
