Smile King-Air Flying Club. Biggin Hill (Late '70's)

Any ppruners who learnt to fly here ?
I have fond memories of this place. Lord & Lady King (Gordon & Miriam)
who worked together each day, but hardly exchanged a word (!)

Cyril Knight (Deputy CFI) The original grumpy-old-man, but when you really got to know him, a smashing bloke- a natural pilot, who taught me a lot.
You never needed the screens when IMC training with Cyril; he would be rolling his Old Holborn in a green rizla before you even got t/o clearance, and by the time we were at 2000', you could just about read the instruments, let alone see outside !

Don Potter (who taught me to fly) Patience of the proverbial angel, (he had to !), and explained that rounding out at the height of a double-decker, meant really 5 feet, not 50 !

My Memories of King Air are from the early 70s, a great place to work!!

Heard a rumour that there were more than one set of Kings!!
I remember Gordon and Lilian !!!(spelling?)

Also Richard Ellis, Sadie, Barry and the elderly couple..(Bill ?
and ???)

I was bought up at Biggin Hill with my Parents Kevin and Barbara Hills. My dad (Kevin) was CFI at Air Touring my Nan ran the kitchen. Kevin then moved to Trans Europe with Stuart Patterson.

I seemed to be dragged around the Flying Clubs. Richard and Pam Ellis, Gordon and Lillian, Cyril.. They were the good old days

390- Only one set of Kings, (Yes it was Lilian!)

The elderly couple were the Barnes'. Cannot remember Bill's wife's name.

I was amazed to see Bill flying the club's chippy solo one day- He was
quite elderly, with a pronounced stoop, but obviously was getting through
the medical still !. Nice couple as I recall.

Thumbs up

Hi, this is little of the original topic, but I started my career at BH as an engineer and worked on the King Air a\c for a while, the C172, the PA 28 etc.

Gordon King was always down with our MD and we had a young, very young Fitz Costa taxying a\c back and forth.

Believe he went onto to greater things, not heard of him for a while though.

I'm still resident @ BH, too many years perhaps, can't get it out of me system.

Michael Fitz Costa went on to Britannia, got a command and I saw him in Australia in 1999!!!! Progressed into Cathay 747's but became one of the 49ers. The last I saw of him was looking for any flying but enjoying a very early retirement. I only wish I could!!! Me still flying and still poor!!

Hi must be M I guess, I haven't seen Kevin for a quite a few years now, is he still with Lauda as was. I trained at Air Touring back in the 70's and remember your Mum and Doreen etc. that was before moving on and hauling heavy metal for Cathay. I would love to get back in touch with him, if you can PM me with a contact.

Cheers

Another one with happy memories of KingAir.
Cyril Knight taught me to fly in 1975. A great guy and real character.
Gordon King got me through the IR on the Apache. Are Gordon and Lillian still around?
In 1977 I was an instructor at the club, the one with the baby who is now 29.
Time also flies.
Regards to all ex BH.

Great memories with Cyril, G-ARJV took us to France for Cyrils duty Free on many occasion. Great man, great instructor, terrible shock when his brother was killed. As for Gordon, again a great man, always had his cap on the door. Met the love of my life 1978 at Halloween party there..great memories.
