European MPL to FAA conversion
Hi Everyone
Hope you guys are doing well. Before you all kick about this question, help a brother out. I fly for an EU airline and hold an MPL licence. I will soon have 1500 hours on type and will undergo the process of unfreezing my license. I have a green card and want to immigrate to America to fly there. I know that after 1500 hours I can apply to get an FAA licence. My questions are these. After unfreezing my license, will holding an MPL licence hinder me in obtaining an FAA ATP? Will my FAA ATP be restricted to multi pilot ops only? Having an FAA ATP with multi pilot restriction make it harder to get hired? Will US airlines especially the legacy carriers care and look down upon me having an FAA ATP with multi pilot restriciton? To those who take the time to reply, thank you for your help, information and any advise you give. Clear skies to all |
There is no MPL in the FAA arsenal, and, apart from Transport Canada, no real ‘conversion’ process. The FAA allow you to apply for an ATP with a foreign Commercial certificate or higher, but it is the standard application process. You can start the application in IACRA, which now includes helpful error-checking.
You should be able to take your ATP check-ride combined with a Type Rating - if your current type is available here (recommended). This should give you MEL class and type. As for completing the requirements, you will need to tick all the boxes for the components of 61.159. This should not be a problem if you hold an EASA ATPL. Finally, you will also need to complete the ATP-CTP course, before taking the Knowledge Test. Good luck. |

You'll need more than just 1500 hours. Check part 61.159 for the full breakdown. You'll also need to do an ATP-CTP sim course.
Not at all. Your FAA ATP will be standalone, based on you meeting the experience requirements. No, they don't have MPLs. No, they don't have MPLs. No, they don't have MPLs. |

Also be careful with that Green card, it comes with residency requirements which you are likely not meeting right now if you are working/living in Europe. It can be revoked for that reason upon attempted entry. https://legalclarity.org/how-can-a-green-card-be-revoked-reasons-and-process/ |
Unfreezing to what? Looking at the FCL, you can maybe unfreeze to a CPL if you comply with the hours requirements.. in this particular case its the PIC time that will likely shoot that down.
This leads to the same issue on the FAA conversion as there are also PIC time requirements. Sadly you are sitting with the most useless licence type, perpetrated by airlines lobbying the authorities to get cheap gear swingers. |
