P&W R985 multiple cylinder failures:
Hi we purchased two OH R985 from a “reputable” source in the USA. At 120-130 hrs run we experienced a dozen cylinder failures (head to barrel leaks, head separation, head cracking) We approached the overhauled who essentially told us to get stuffed. All gauges were checked and found to be in calibration. I’m an ex licensed UK CAA inspector up to P&W R2800. We reported the matter to the FAA in 2021 they have done nothing however they did state we are not the only case. The FAA stated that the Overhaul shop had a “special repair” enabling the separation of head and barrel at overhaul. This directly conflicts the P&W overhaul manual. The special repair is a proprietary document so we are not permitted to see it. The question is: Is there a mechanism by which we can force disclosure ? This is a major airworthiness issue and it seems we are hamstrung by a mechanism that protects the “guilty” party. It is our view that unscrewing the head and barrel cannot result in a proper seal, pre-load and radially correct position.
thanks 🙏🙏🙏 |
RH,
Have you asked your question on more US-centric websites ? |
Should have bought a Turbo Beaver.
