Also, Co-Pilot: a fully qualified pilot who shares duties at the pointy end of the aircraft with the captain but is not the legal commander (unless the latter is incapacitated). This is pretty unambiguous to me.

Just like a First officer is second-in-command of the aircraft to the captain...but because of various airline schemes to pay less, distinctions of rank such as Junior First Officers, First Officers, Senior First Officers, Second Officers, Relief-qualified First Officers etc have become popular...

Co-Pilot is just a military term for the same function as an FO.


I would not call my First Officer anything other than that however out of respect for his, or her hard earned position and that is their position in my airline.


The Astronauts at NASA were so into their titles they insisted that the left seater on the Space Shuttle was ranked as 'Commander' with the right seater as 'Pilot'


There could be no 'Co Pilot's' in that rarefied world, funny but understandable considering the requirements to get to that seat !

well ironically, as I tried to point out, the origin of FO is military, while (co)pilot has a civilian origin :ok:
