Help Please

Can any of you guys and girls recommend a good school in the Miami area at which to do a ATP written?

I will be in the area for a month doing a B727 rating and thought it would be a good opportunity to convert my South African licence to a FAA license seeing that I can do the flight review on the sim.

All inputs appreciated.

Been there, done that

My advice would be to take your SA ATPL (or CPL) FIRST to the local FAA FSDO (Flight Standard District Office) in MIA. If you hold a current ATP, they will automatically issue you with an FAA Commericial (Restricted). No charge for this. However, because it is restricted, you cannot fly "for hire or reward" with this certificate. Then, take your FAA ATP written, combine the FAA ATP checkride as part of your 727 type rating and hey presto, you will come out of it with an US FAA ATP with a B727 Type Rating.

Good luck - it can be done provided you know the steps and it is certainly much cheaper than the UK CAA or now JAA/JAR.

Hope that helps.

Fill in the license verification form at top of forum and fax to FAA in Oklahoma +1 (405) 954-9922. List of FSDO's should be on www1.faa.gov Do this asap as it can take a while......helps if you find out who in Pretoria deals with it and they can expedite, because that is where the hold-up normally occurs.

They will send you a letter that confirms your SA license (can't remember if they send it to you directly, or if they just send a letter to say to pick it up at the FSDO that you elected in the application) . That is all you should need to do the flight test if you have your SA ATP. I got the FAA PPL from the local FSDO on the strength of that letter, but found out later that it wasn't necessary.

Then do the written at ALLATPS. Last look was about $200-300. They have the database down to about 550 questions which they assure you will include EVERY question that may come up in the online exams......... would have to agree with them on that, from my experience. Get there at 8 or so in the morning...spend the day going through the questions and write the exam later that afternoon. Short and sweet. If you already have SA ATP, should be a bit of a joke.

Good luck, and I will happily accept a few Bohlinger's for information rendered ;) ....that is if uncle Bob hasn't redistributed all the bottles!

Thanks guys

To both of you guys, thanks a lot. I am looking forward to the B727 rating and hope to find the time to get to the ATP written.

Fly safe....
