jaa conversion
once again,
regarding a jaa conversion: after researching the forum for hints and ways to convert my licence into a jaa licence, it seems to become obvious that no matter what you gotta write the 14 exams.( unless you have the 3000hrs in above 30tons a/c) with more than 1500 pic on 2 pilot aircraft i will be exempt from attending a course prior taking the written test. my question, what is the easiest way to prepare for these exams, or which country offers it to be done the easiest and most expedious way. e.g. does a particular country publish the question like the usa faa does. does anybody know if you get credit for your jaa licence if you already hold a german atpl validation with pic typerating cheers trot |

If you already hold a German ATPL it's only a matter of going to the authority and converting your license to JAR.

I'm just a little curious (& perhaps out of touch having been away from Europe for 4 years), but how does this JAA/JAR license conversion work?
The reason I ask is that I have a UK CAA ATPL with a B-737 type rating - time expired in 2001; an Irish IAA ATPL with the whole 737 series incl. NG & an FAA ATP with B737, B757, B767 types. My last PC was in a 737-800NG in Feb 2003 & I have already been told by a recruitment agency with a contact in the CAA that since my UK ATPL is "within a 5-year window" and I already have the 737 on the FAA licence, that I would initially get a foreign licence validation & then after completing the airline's sim training, I would get the JAR licence. I wonder if this is really accurate & whther it would also work for the 757/767 on which I have 3 years experience and some 2200 hrs out of a total of 7200+. Comments gratefully rcvd - I may have to come back home!:confused: |
It shouldn't be too difficult as you have a UK CAA ATPL.
It's a bit of a dig but scratch around LASORS and you should find an answer. LASORS replaces the old "GID's" |

Yes, I do have a UK CAA ATPL - have had it for 10 years but it EXPIRED in June 2001. I was wondering if that would make any difference? I do know that if you have a jet type rating on any ICAO licence & you have not flown the type in a 5 year period, you gotta do a full type rating course to be legal. As for the basic licence, that I don't know. In the USA, the ATP(L) is valid for life - there are no 10 year validity periods on the licence per se. It is currency that is important ie. IFR & 3 takeoffs and landings in a 90-day concurrent period. Thanks for yr info. |

I don't know the full ins and outs of the UK ATPL. This "expiry" thing seems to be a UK thing. I got my JAR ATPL last year. My Aus ATPL is valid indefinitely, just have a current medical. It seems a bit harsh to have to do a full type rating again just because you haven't flown the type for +5 years. An abbreviated one would have been sufficient. Pester the CAA. Have a really good look around the site. There is a lot of info there but sometimes not always easy to find. Surprised? No, didn't think so. :D Jamup, Not at this present time. |
If you have the required hours and only have to do 2 exams + skilltest on the type for the UK CAA be aware that your UK JAR ATPL will be restricted to "UK registered aircraft only", however most countries may accept that, but ?
I did the hole lot to convert my foreign ATPL to an unrestricted UK JAR ATPL, 14 exams + skilltest on the type with the UK CAA. Pain in the .... but worth it in the end. If you want another (additional) typerating in the UK JAR ATPL you only need to do the skilltest with an UK examiner (and have more than 500 hours on the type or go through an approved JAR course) Cheers, and good luck |
