BA Retirement

Is there any credibility in the compulsory retirement age being raised to 67 or beyond for BA in line with Employment Rights Act

I would be a very expensive budget line given that I will lose my class 1 at 65…

Why? What is going to happen to you at 65?

The Class 1 won't be lost at 65 but it will no longer be valid for public transport operations which is what BA do. If the law changes to allow public transport over 65 years of age then BA would have little choice but to raise the retirement age.

Compulsory retirement age was made illegal in 2011 in the UK unless it can be objectively justified (which it can due to medical not being valid after 65 to do the job). This legislation changes nothing in that respect.

Where would a BA pilot be able to continue flying after 65, unless the world (ICAO) agrees to raise the maximum age for commercial air transport?

I guess if you wanted to work past 65 for BA you could use that legislation to make them give you a ground job of some sort, not for me though.

I’m no employment lawyer….

But if you can’t perform the role you are employed in, can you “make them” give you a ground roll?

Obviously you can apply for a ground roll

In answer to the original question - no, there is zero credibility to it.

In a sense, Speed Trim is correct. The Licence no longer being valid is a loss. If it is illegal to discriminate on age in employment issues, why is it still legal to discriminate, medically, for the same reason ? Arbitrary age.

Long dispute. Long debate on PPrune. Lost my job because I ruffled too many feathers in the pursuit.

And yet, my 83 year old local GP stumbled into his office, did a Joe Biden by trying to sit on a chair that wasn't there, pricked his own finger when going for routine blood/sugar check on me . Of course, changed GP.

Numpties still in control and not much focus going on here.

Not only national rules which are limiting, there are several countries which you can not operate into as a captain once you turn 65.

In Australia there is nothing to limit you flying past 65 but international flying would be a nightmare to roster then there is always the possibility of having to divert to a prohibited port.

The options for me were to transfer to completely national flying, which several colleagues had done, or retire voluntarily which I did.

Cheers,
BH.

Just live life and enjoy the years of retirement on the golf course, sailing or what ever activity you enjoy!

And this is why one should not make a life/lifestyle out of a career, otherwise there is nothing on the other side.
