Leather jackets anyone?
Not sure if this is the best place to ask but seems closest:
Is anyone aware of European airlines that issue or at least permit their pilots to wear leather jackets on jet equipment? Several US carriers (notably SWA) do but I don’t recall ever seeing this in Europe. (At least one US carrier apparently does not allow it for non-American destinations. IMHO they’d be more useful than the navy-inspired blues and could be more comfortably be worn while sitting. Factual answers as well as opinions welcome. |
Depending on how European you consider them to be: DHL permitted leather flight jackets. And Lufthansa used to permit some in their historic flight unit. Some UK helicopter operators seem to use them as well and quite a few business jet pilots. It might be more of a US thing? AFAIK leather is FAA certifiable for fire resistance. Much better than plastic but maybe not up to the latest Day-Glo vest requirements?

The DHL leather uniform jacket was for EAT crews, so about as European as you get. DHK had a whole series of uniform coats most of which were rubbish although the most recent Stormtech is really good - also an excellent ski jacket (or so I'm told)!
