Hey Banon, Lots of good info there and thanks for the english lesson. no steam from my ears, takes a lot more than things on PPRUNE to upset me.
Jacko, less than 300NM from Basra and Tehran, just a bit too close for me.
I know quite a few guys flying out there, some like it, some don't, just as at Ryanair. Choice and opinion, thats what it's all about. Chill!

Banon tx for the info.

"Company accommodation which is a 3 bed apartment", unfortunately i'm really keen on having privacy.

Fifth Fleet

I've got lots of friends out in Qatar, and if faced with the choice would choose
Qatar over Ryanair.

I also don't think that Qatar will suffer the same fate as Egypt, Bahrain et al.
But don't kid yourself that having the US armed forces on your doorstep will stop any uprisings.
Bahrain is strategically more important to the USA then Qatar. It is home port to the USN Fifth Fleet. And I don't see the American's rushing in to help. They could be doing things behind the scene, but we'll never know.
You only have to look at the US actions in Libya, they can't wait to hand over command of the military action, lest they be seen to be intervening in a Muslim/Arab country.

Ryan Air sucks
QR sucks

at least from the primarily source of revenue ... the passengers!

Brie:
It's not a shared 3-bed apt. It's a 3-bed apt for each pilot although many are only getting a two bed and I believe a very small few are getting a one bed apt. However, the company will (after you apply and reach the top of the list) provide an accommodation allowance which is more than enough to live very comfortably in a 4 bed villa in many areas of the city.

In regards to your query about whether to go for ryanair or Qatar; being your first job, either would be a fantastic start for your career - jet job and quick hour building. Each have their pros and cons but I believe the decision here should come down to your life outside of work. Ryanair will leave you with little money left over once you are paying taxes, housing, loan repayments for type rating etc. Qatar will pay you well enough to allow you to take advantage of the staff travel and enjoy yourself outside of Doha if the lifestyle there is not your 'ideal' life - I have spent 2 years really enjoying life in Doha. Friends and an open/proactive mind will allow you to enjoy sandpit life.

I think it might also be worth remembering that fleet expansion will stop in Ryanair within 18 months and with it rapid command upgrade. The only command slots will be those created by Captains leaving for BA/Emirates/Virgin ...or whoever they can. So unless you joined Ryanair within the last 2 years I would say the chances of command in Ryanair will be slight. Although knowing Ryanair if you are willing to do it for less than the minimum wage ...you never know :ugh:

Hi all!,

Is not exactly the same question but I guess it fits in this topic.
Anyone recently made the move from FR to QR? Any happy/unhappy people in Qatar after leaving Ryanair? Would you stay for the command in FR or go long haul in QR as an FO?

RAT 5 5th December 2014 21:16

Apples & oranges. Do you like Red wine or beer. It is far too personal. There is no black & white answer.

I would suspect there is little difference in company cultures from what I have read about QR, but at least with RYR you live in a continent, whichever base you get, where you have plenty of rights and protections. You will also get a fairly good roster, unless you have to commute to a base away from home on days off, and the vast majority of your colleagues will be amiable and sociable on and off duty. I don't know how QR compares on that front, so make no judgement at all there, but it's one thing you don't need to worry about with RYR. From what I have read, but I stress not experienced, about QR, I'd go RYR. It's far from perfect, but is a good place to cut your teeth and seems now to be a very good line on a CV when applying to legacies like BA, Virgin, KLM and such.

Any new views on FO B777 QR vs staying at Ryanair?

TypeIV 7th March 2015 08:20

In the end it boils down to if you are happy with living in Doha or not. The T&C are not too bad in general. Everyone is different, some people prefer instructing piston for food while other people are happy even in Baghdad.

fleu 8th March 2015 07:14

Anyone made the move recently?

VJW 8th March 2015 16:13

Come on lads, don't start slagging someone just because they work for RYR. Don't assume everyone who works for them is 'stuck' there. We all know that can't be true for everyone, so don't slag someone for assuming Doha is in a war zone, and then assume yourself that he has this idea and being stuck in RYR explains why..

Qatar Airways pilot/cabin crew dating:

To be fair, in 90% of cases they don't fire the pilot they fire the girl - and put her on the immigration blacklist for next couple of years so she can't return to country and see her boyfriend - yes I do personally know one couple where that's exactly what happened.
Just one of a thousand reasons not to join this toilet bowl airline.
