Sick Pay

I wonder how much sick leave is paid on average in our business for pilots. In our company we get only 12 days per year. After 12 days off sick the salary stops, which is horrendous when there are mortgages to pay and kids to feed. This happened to a friend of mine recently. We have LOL insurance, critical illness cover, pension etc but nothing covers the scenario of going sick over 12 days when the illness does not permanently invalidate your medical.

It doesn't take much for a pilot to be off sick. Just a mild ear infection, sprained knee, ankle etc would do the trick. None of these conditions would necessarily stop an office worker going to work. One case of piggy flu could use up all 12 days probably which we would probably contract from passengers anyway. (Admittedly, we don't fly pigs that often nowadays:})

How many sick days are paid by other companies for pilots and how much leeway do they give?

Thanks in advance.

Up to 6 months in a 12 month period, if long term sick over 6 months, you go onto PHI @ 75% pay.

Leeway given for those not taking the piss, so if you return off long term sickness (e.g. over 6 months cumulatively), sick days still paid in full.

We are a BALPA airline.

Thanks Barden.

We definitely need to improve our sick pay allowance.

Are there any more examples to compare with this or is this the industry standard?

Cheers

D :)
