EK stopping hiring
 

Had an interview date scheduled Aug. 11-13. Just recieved email cancelling interview. Stating due to current fuel prices and economic conditions EK is putting a freeze on hiring and does not know when it will continue.
Something fishy going on if they have 200 firm orders coming.
Anyone else heard anything?

There goes my fast track command:ouch: I guess the age old rule of don't believe it until you get your first paycheck...:yuk:

DXB no oil left, inflation at a real figure of 22% and growing, who the heck would go to DXB. That's not counting the road traffic et al. Tourism ain't going to get them back.

DXB & the rest of the UAE will survive, but at a realistic rate, it's not a gold mine. When you're there, you're only an expat to be used and sent home when you're use has been exhausted, are you surprised?

Been to/in the original sandpit/new sandpit, learnt the leasons, and still happy. As long as you understand the status quo, you're fine.

Training classes and hiring pools are filled to capacity and interviews are delayed unitl the beginning of their next fiscal year. They're not going out of business just yet. Check with Typhoonpilot on Airline Pilot Central for further details. He has the inside skinny. Good luck.:ok:

They haven't stopped hiring, they have filled all the courses between now and next march so are cutting back on interviews for awhile. Once they get closer to the new year i am sure they will be interviewing again. The large number of layoffs in the US atm has flooded the market here so they are for once ahead of the curve.

I was under the impression that it was Abu Dhabi that had all the oil & gas & that Dubai's planned income was to come from Commerce & Tourism.

I'm no expert but I was told on a recent visit that Dubai has 10 years of oil left, whilst Abu Dhabi has nearer 100 years left. I've no idea if this is true I must add though :bored:

Etihad's huge aircraft order at Farborough should give more of an insight into the foreseeable future of commercial aviation in the Middle East.

fare increases of 11% since 1st July
 

Interestingly EK increase Ecy fares 6% on 1st Jul and have advised 5% increase 2Aug in Australian market.(another 10% for business and first!)
They lowered agent commissions by 2% on 1st July. This doe not take into account the 30% increase in value they receive with the upward valuation of the $AU in last year or so
Perhaps the truth is that their flights are not worth $5-700 more than the competition in economy

could be they arent worth the extra, but as long as the 80%+ load factors continue guess they are pricing the market accordingly.

several boeings delayed due to galleys, up to 7 weeks for @ 5 777 right now
380 has a 2 -3 month delay next year maybe a slight slow down on the AB. Over 100 appl's a week coming in all spots filled until next year
Very little need for DEC's planned but that can change.
upgrades delayed more so on the 777 than the AB

I see more optimising of routes, which is fair enough given the price of oil

I know what you mean! On 20th June I booked a ticket with EK for mid July which was priced at €555. I was warned to pay for it by the end of the month as prices had to go up 5%. They then told me that they had extended it to July 14th but would now increase 11%. (Economy ticket and not to/from Australian Market).

At the end of the day because of an increase 'outstation', I was asked to pay €809, which in my book is more than a 45% increase in fare in just a couple of weeks. Some fuel surcharge!

Pull the ladder up I am OK! You don't realise that people like myself have a bunch of experience in world wide ops, with A1 operators and have given up Commands/Training etc on medium heavy iron to have a crack in the sand box. Actually flying the 777 with EK is less challenging than shoe horning a 767-300 into Kos or Corfu etc at night.

I accept that things change quickly in this business but there is no need to be smug or sanctimonious about it.

Dubai had so much natural gas 25-30 years ago they built a huge gas turbine electrical plant on the coast close to the port, and an aluminum smelter (BIG electricity consumer) next door (DUBAL) so they're have a means of turning the gas into an exportable product - aluminum ingots.

Apparently still in operation.

EDIT: And still building!
