Standbys ........ how long are yours ?
 

Ryanair has just changed its home standbys from 8 hours to 12 hours. Early standbys are now from 0500 Z to 1700 z , and late standby's from 1030 z to 2230 Z.


This has gone down like a lead balloon with most pilots ! Just wondered what other short haul operators do with their standbys ?

Ive just noticed this on my roster? I must of missed the memo as I don't recall being informed of this? Not Happy!!

Yeah there was no memo about this - or I missed it too. How can they call you out on early stby after midday - all the flights will have gone. Or they will have where I am. We should have been notified though, that's really bad form.:*

They can now cut the SBY requirement by 1/3rd now, therefore we should be getting less SBYs in the month.... I bet we don't though, don't understand how they can do this without at least informing us.
Now you cannot even plan a nice evening when your on late SBYs as i am today, not good!

They do this because they can, because we can't stand up to them. Join a union, get your colleagues to join too. Then instead of bitching about it on proon, you can direct your union to renegotiate the standbys to something more acceptable.
When will the ryanair pilots, alone of any major pilot group in Europe, learn that a union is a vital necessity?

In answer to your question Camel, yes I am. Why don't we get the union to renegotiate? Because FR don't negotiate with unions. I'm not overly fussed about the additional time on stby (although it does bother me) what I'm annoyed about is the lack of notification to the change.

Our standby´s are when and for how ever long we are told. Anytime from 0500-1200LT is typical for the standby to start and they can be as long as 12hrs. The best type of standby is the 11hr airport one they have us doing, where we are there for emergency and are the last people they will ever call :ugh: I will have done 7 sbys or so during October.

No real union representation at Ryanair? What can I say except it sounds familiar.

Not complaining too much though, its my first job and I´m grateful for that :}

in CAL , we do 24hrs standbys at home, if you go out, you have to leave a cel. #

True true but you forget to mention that the 12 hours home standby is UNPAID! and the 11 hour airport standby is only paid for 3 block hours :ugh::ugh::ugh:

Surley your duty hours will go through the roof with 12 hour SB's????

I'm flying biz jets. We are on call for 24 hours when we have a duty day. The good thing is that my home base has a night ban :p!

IN my Coastguard days, I once did a 9 week long standby (24hrs a day).

JB007, you are right about the increase in duty hours, however in Ryanairland things work differently (apparently).


A colleague on standby was phoned at home and called out for a duty later on that day involving 4 sectors and a long'ish duty period. When asked what time he would be expected back and raising FTL concerns, he was told that half (correct) of his SBY from when it started at 0400Z till the time he was callled by the crewing department (incorrect) would be added to his duty. In other words, you’re only on SBY till the phone rings ! That is the Ryanair position apparently. As usual Ryanair's ops manual is unclear on any issue like this, where the company can manipulate it to its advantage. And once again the spineless individuals in the IAA just sit on the sidelines and take no action.
At least most UK operators (operating under CAP 371) have it in black and white :-

12.3 If a crew member is called out from standby, the standby duty will cease when that individual reports at the designated reporting point.

Not a short haul nor a loco although it looks like one by moments... 24hrs stby.

Most companies that I have ever worked for had a 12 hour standby period.

In the event of a call-out then half of the time already spent on standby counted towards the subsequent duty.

I hated standbys whilst down the route but I never minded home standbys. I always reckoned that the days at home when I wasn't called out were a bit of a bonus and were an opportunity to do all the jobs that the Family Controller had been bitching about for months and all done in company time!

Standbys are 12 or 13 hours usually but can be shorter to stay inside the roster stability scheme. However none of the standby time is duty time so if they call you a minute before that 12 hour period is over you still can work for another 14 hours (or 16 in case of unexpected delays), even an 18 hour split duty is still legal in germany.

Usual standby times are 5:00lt til 18:00lt or 10:00lt til 22:00lt

For uk operators, with CAP371, max sby time is 12 hours.
And allowable FDP is based on the time the standby starts?

To be honest, I can't see the point in very long standby duties.

We have 8 hours max, sometimes 4.

Here in Atlanta,we have a 15 hour reserve period with 2 hours to report to the airport.We also have a few guys nearing 1000 hours and are about to time out for the rest of the year.
