Working in Italy
 

Can somebody please tell me how much a 737 Driver working in Italy can expect to get, ie. monthly takehome. Just been offered a sim check with an Italian operator and can find little or no information on existing Pprune topics for Italy. Anything else about flying or living beautiful italy you think i may need to know would be useful Thanks.

Depending on carrier and flight hours, a cpt can earn up to 10millions itl (around 5000euro). A f/o 5 to7 millions...but figures may vary according to contracts. Life is nice, food even better...it worth.

I don't know how much you can expect to make but living in Italy has its plusses and minuses. The food is great, wine is great, housing standard in the north off Italy is very high and cheap. On the down side if you don't speak Italian expect to have no social life, ATC is a joke, don't expect any ground perosonell to speak english, sometime the cabin crew speaks better english then the pilots.
The roads are good but the drivers are crazy, don't bring a nice car.

take an italian crash course, get involved and interested in the people and their culture ( and what a culture it is !!! ) and you'll have the time of your life. Applies to any country in the world.

I would like to find out, what type of requirements Itlian Carriers are looking for
for when hiring pilots?

I live in Toronto, Canada and would have loved to fly for one of those carriers.

I am still trying to get my first job.
It is extremely hard to land (pun not intended) to land your first flying position.

Well I agree that iformation about Italy and its carriers are rare. But ... I`ll try:

1) Convert an ICAO ATPL to an Italian ATPL is very difficult (time and money) ?
2) What carriers operate 737`s ?
3) The same question about how much I can expect to earn ?
4) How about the cost of living ?

Well, please ...

I`m from Brazil, have Italian Passport because my grandfather is from Italy and want to fly in Italy in the near future ... well ... at least I`ll try !!!

1. Converting a non EU ATPL is going to become more difficult. Italian Civilavia is still not in line with JAR-FCL so your best bet is convert your licence via the UK. You could get a validation on your current licence but you'll need an airline to sponsor you for that. This will require something like a B737 rating, with experience on type to justify an airline entertaining you with a foreign licence.
2. Who opertaes B737s? Blue Panorama, Air One, NJI and a series of new start-ups.
3. Salary can be between 1.8m-7m lira per month after tax. This depends who you work for. Volare is at the low end and Azzurra-Meridiana and the high end of the salary scale.
4. Best airline to work for is probably Meridiana. With 40 hrs flying a month you take home around 6.5m lira and you have at least 12 days off per month.

Thank you for the answers. I agree with you, the best way is to convert to an UK ATPL, the only problem is the high cost of doing that.
About the salaries, sorry but are you talking about F/O`s, Captains or both ? If it includes Captains it is not to much money, so I think the living costs are not as high as other places like London or Dublin, am I right ?

The salaries I quoted are for FOs, increase by 30% and you get the Captains ones.

Are there jobs going? Yes, try Alpi Eagles for instance they should be hiring about 12 pilots including some direct entry Captains. They operate the F100 from Venice. A friend flies for them and tells me it's a pleasant place to be.

Blue Panoramo will be recruiting in October on the B737, both Capts & FOs.

Air One should be hiring 4 copilots in September, preference to type rated pilots.

Then there are a series of new start ups like Air Italy from Brescia who will be starting operations with B767s on 22 December.

just curious as to the chances of an aussie with 2000 tt and 500 multi turbine?

would it be easier to go the 737 endors. and some time on it? or the cost involved for a UK ATP?

The problem is not a 737 type or a JAA licence but the legal right to live and work in the EU,if you hold grandfather rights of some sort and therefore an EU citizenship then the JAA licence is the way to go otherwise you'll have to cue for a visa together with the refugees from the ex Yugoslavia.

How about the living costs in Italy ? I`ve heard that in some cities it is quit cheap to live ... what do you think ? Compare with England (London) and Ireland (Dublin) ?
