Chaps,

I've been wading through this area, and got a lot of useful specific information.

However, I'm giving a career talk to a group of sixth-formers in a few weeks, and want to give them a reasonable idea of the pay (conditions, career progression, training routes, etc. I'm pretty up to speed on) across the aircraft industry. I'm really only after ballpark figures, but would be most grateful for information along the lines of...

Sort of thing.


Anything you chaps and chappesses can post would be appreciated - don't bother with too much detail, it's not of great use, but if I can show these kids and their parents realistically what they can expect both at the start of a career (yes I know, assuming that they get a job) and later on it would help a lot.

I am interested in everything - airline ops, flying instruction, aircraft design, aeronautical research, maintenance, ATC - basically anybody paid to make aeroplanes work and be safe.

If you don't want to admit who you work for "small UK based regional airline" is still pretty useful information to me.

Large "flag" carrier, UK. ;)

New entry FO (straight out of training), A320, B737: OTE £40k
SFO: average OTE £80k, depending on fleet and seniority.
Captain: average OTE £110k, depending on fleet and seniority.

All approximate and before tax. Based upon a typical 820 flying hours per year on longhaul and 750 flying hours for shorthaul.

I dont know if you can use this but there are currently 3 universities doing an 'aviation management' degree which includes a pilot ground training course. They are at Loughborough, London City and London Metropolitan(arguably the best :p ) univerities. They cover finance, safety, flight operations and all business aspects. They range from 200 to 300 UCAS points to enter iirc.
