BMI Baby again...

Is BMIBaby looking for experienced pilots on B737 right now?
I'm constantly updating my information and c.v. via their website, but I never get any feedback from them.
I have 1000h on B737EFIS aircraft.

Also, what are the travel concessions as BMIBaby employee? ID travel with BMI-group or only on -Baby? This is important to me as my partner and I actually reside in Paris.

Thanx,

Despegue

Gary Lager 10th December 2005 11:34

Yes.

Website seems to be unreliable, workload at HQ means recruiting done as and when time allows. Fairly sporadic at the moment but keep details up to date or try a direct e-mail or two.

Staff travel available across entire bmi group only.

VARIG737 10th December 2005 12:56

Star Alliance

I think you can get a staff travel at any star alliance member. I work at VARIG and there are always someone from other member airlines flying ID90 with us (Lufthansa, BMI, Spaniar, United, etc..). You can get to any destination in the world....

Regards

despegue 10th December 2005 13:20

A sincere thank you!

Gary Lager 10th December 2005 14:10

VARIG737 - true for bmi employees, not for bmibaby employees.

staff travel for bmibaby crew only with bmi group (i.e. longhaul/regional/mainline/baby)

captplaystation 10th December 2005 14:38

despegue, have you considered Ryanair? Free travel (in uniform)from BVA to several bases, possible BVA base in the next year or so,and cheapo RYR travel (how unusual) for your missus. Not a lot with anyone else though, just a thought. Your 1000 hrs 737 time would be right up their street, maybe even "persuade" them that they want to pay for your differences course instead of you,& you would end up with a bit more money I should imagine.Only strange thing is that they never started STN-BVA after we took over Buzz and dumped STN-CDG, must be one of the very few RYR destinations not flown from STN.

Hudson Bay 10th December 2005 15:20

Baby staff get staff travel with Star Alliance.

You can get it with BA as well. Just go direct.

All recruitment is completed. If your details were filled out on the bmibaby website then they would have been looked at. Looks like you got passed over this time. Ryan and Easy are both looking for 737 drivers. I heard that Easy just have a one to one interview these days because they are so short. I would think you could walk straight in.

Dirty Harry 76 11th December 2005 09:15

Despegue. I am curious to know what bmi b s requirements are to. I have a similar no of hrs on both classic\ng myself and know they have taken guys with no time on Type. I also live near 3 of their bases which i understand is important to them. My current company released a guy a few months ago for poor performance and with only a couple of hundred of hrs on type they called him in for interview! There you go.

captplaystation 11th December 2005 15:27

If Baby is anything like mainline it depends on your handshake. . . if you get my drift! & if you don't ,I guess you won't get in.

acbus1 12th December 2005 06:13

....poor performance and with only a couple of hundred of hrs on type they called him in for interview!
Perhaps some of the puzzled applicants should ask themselves if the recruitment inconsistencies, listed above, give a valuable insight into the state of the company.

oscarh 12th December 2005 10:46

acbus1

You can't resist it, can you? Why don't you get a life?

Hood 12th December 2005 13:20

Actually acbus 1 has a point here...

The standard in bmi baby has gone down the toilet. There are so many inconsistancies in this company it's unbelievable and it has been happening since baby's conception. From Direct Entry Captains to command upgrades transfers from within the group and latterly contract pilots. This organisation is barely managing to stay intact and there are more people looking eslewhere than they care to admit because then they would have to admit their own failings.

There are some tremendously hardworking and loyal crew at baby who have put in the time and effort over the last 2 to 3 years but their patience is being tested.

The problem with hiring/upgrades etc is there is no transparency to any of it. It's all personal selection by those who have wrangled the job this time round and has always been the case.

Now contract captains are getting pretty much any thing they want with regard to part time and days off. Something all those who have been there since the start are refused. We now have the situation where contract captains are being let off from mistakes (incidants) and refusal to do certain duties, something that at Midland and now as permenant baby crew we would be fired for.

So if you want a job at baby, as a contractor apply and you can pretty much write your contract..

Gary Lager 12th December 2005 15:49

contract captains are being let off from mistakes (incidants) and refusal to do certain duties, something that at Midland and now as permenant baby crew we would be fired for.

What would you suggest the alternative is to being 'let off' after an 'incidant' [sic]? The sack? The bmi group has an exceptionally progressive attitude to flight safety, a great deal having evolved post-Kegworth, and punishment for genuine errors has never been a feature of it, except where gross neglience or recklessness has been involved.

Is it the fact that contract Captains are involved that upsets you so much? I doubt you are in full possession of the facts of any 'incidant' you refer to here.

On a serious note, if you have genuine concerns about flaws in the safety culture or the airline I take it you have already written to inform the CAA, or at the very least CHIRP about these 'incidants', rather than just making vague anonymous comments on the internet. What was their response?

As for permanent baby (or Midland) being 'fired' for refusing duties - plenty have refused duties in the past, with varying degrees of justification, and plenty have (rightly) had office-based chats about same; but to my knowledge the only chap ever fired for said offence subsequently won a substantial victory in the courts. I do not consider the firing of crews for refusing duties a particularly representative characteristic of any section of the bmi group.

If you have industrial issues with the company, fair enough. But to cast aspersions on the professionalism of your colleagues and misrepresent the company culture is quite disingenuous.

alterego 12th December 2005 19:19

Contract guys definitely get the better deal. The company seem to bend over backwards to keep a very expensive and demanding contract type rather than invest in the permanent staff.

Gary Lager 12th December 2005 19:34

Whether or not they get a better 'deal' depends on your personal priorities - the 'contract' option is open to us all, but carries attendant disadvantages.

What makes you think contract pilots are more expensive than permanent staff? Just comparing take-home salary is a far too superficial analysis.

Anyway, are we sure that staff travel across the Star Allianceis available to baby employees? I really thought that was just for mainline/regional crews. Good news if so.

VARIG737 13th December 2005 10:43

Star Alliance

VARIG has 2 subsidiaries: Rio Sul and Nordeste. Both airlines are controlled by VARIG and, as far as I know, their employees have full access to ID90 tickets on other star alliance members. I believe that the same would be true to other S.A members, and that’s why I think that BBaby employees can use this benefit.

Gary Lager 13th December 2005 10:57

With all respect, there are pilots here who are IN bmibaby who believe differently to you!

It would be great if it were true, but the terms for pilots employed by bmi and bmibaby are vastly different in many respects.

Hudson Bay 13th December 2005 13:36

Gary Lager

I have had ID90 travel with the Star Alliance on a number of occasions.

alterego 16th December 2005 19:36

As far as I can find out (having worked here for nearly 3 years). No we can't get ID90s with others. However, if anytone knows differently please PM me.

Gary Lager 19th December 2005 16:23

It may be the case, that if our staff travel department are as organised as some other depts within bmi, then you may well be able to get ID90 as bmibaby staff - but not necessarily that you are entitled to them!

I still don't think we are entitled to any privileges outside the bmi group. Will have a good read of the next 'plain talking' though!

dlav 20th December 2005 15:53

Are bmi baby making the low houred new recruits pay for their type rating?

Appreciate it if anyone could let me know

cheers
dlav

alterego 20th December 2005 20:13

Yes they are.

Not totally sure about the deal, I think it is £6K up front followed by the rest out of your salary for 3 years. I believe the total is £15K and you get paid whilst training but I'm not 100% sure.

dlav 21st December 2005 10:14

ok cheers, thanks for that

Sky_Captain 22nd December 2005 04:54

Any body know when the next round of recruitment by Mr. Durn will be taking place

Regards

S.C. :ok:

Gary Lager 22nd December 2005 09:37

Durn-ford.

Training payment thingy is:

bmibaby Self Sponsorship Type Rating Scheme

Any pilot requiring type rating will be required to reimburse the company for the cost of the appropriate course. The courses available will vary, from time to time, however the current options are a) full conversion course, and b) -200 to -300/800 differences course. The principle is that an initial up front payment will be made prior to commencing the course, followed by a monthly contribution from salary (after tax and other deductions) until the outstanding amount has been repaid. If a pilot leaves the company's employment prior to repaying the full amount owed, their final salary payment will be withheld until funds have been deposited and cleared to repay the outstanding amount.

The current course details are as follows:
a) Full Conversion
£15000 - £3000 up front, followed by 36 monthly payments of £333.33

b) -200 to -300/800 Difference Course
£9000 - £2000 up front, followed by 21 monthly payments of £333.33

The cost of such a scheme is subject to change at any time.

Sky_Captain 22nd December 2005 14:44

Sorry Gary, I meant will they be hiring rated FO's in the near future? Never any responce from their website :ugh:

acbus1 23rd December 2005 06:54

Never any responce from their website
Perhaps some of the prospective applicants should ask themselves if that lack of response gives a valuable insight into the state of the company.

alterego 23rd December 2005 10:16

Acbus... You are getting very boring!

The reason that you are not getting a response is that the company receive loads of applications from people with personal recommendations. These people have been able to get interviews quite quickly.

Management are very busy.

sjm 23rd December 2005 17:28

I went for interview few weeks ago and start on the 31st jan, type rated and bonded for one year £6K. Have a mate at Man whos very happy and doesnt seem to hear many complaints

Brushtype4 23rd December 2005 18:28

The baby Chief Pilot emailed all baby crews today and implied that recruitment for the three new aircraft in the 2006 programme was now complete?

I can only assume that they don't have the staffing levels to respond to everyone's job application?

There are currently only two basic salary scales for pilots in baby, one for Skippers and the other for F/O's.

INKJET 24th December 2005 15:03

ABCUS 1

Its Xmas !!! give it a break, your posts are far from objective and add nothing to the thread. or all the other bmi threads that you "dis" as a matter of routine.

I would like to nominate you for the award of number one "Anti bmi " poster of the year, any one care to second me.

Viktor:cool:

alterego 27th December 2005 15:01

I will!

I'm not the management's biggest fan but even I realise that you don't gain by constantly knocking others. All you do is hack of your supporters.
