Many people ask what it is like to work for Emirates....well let me give you what I believe to be a quick run down on its Philosophy to employment and the consequences of this.

The two main objectives of Emirates is to firstly bring in 60 million pax to DXB by 2012 and secondly to provide employment to locals and their families/friends. This means that most ex-pats are employed almost under sufference and are expected to do their job and 'do as they are told'. We are not employed for our benefit OR opinions and hence life is not fair or equitable! and if you wish to join Emirates it is advisable to remember this.

Hard work WILL NOT get you promotionor recognition. The Arabs respect family and loyalty, and in that order. Hence many in managerial positions are there through WHO they know/suck up to OR WHO they are related to and not through knowledge, experience or skill. So do not complain if your manager (specifically senior managers) are less knowledgeable than you; that is not the criteria for selection.

Let me give you an example: You may have noticed more senior promotions in HR recently. Well the AbdulAziz Al Ali (EVP-HR) clan has again increased its rain. His sister in law, who started as something similar to an office girl in a buisness bureau not that long ago, when she met and got engaged to AbdulAziz's brother. Soon after that she was employed by EK as an HR Superintendent, soon to become HR Manager, Manager HR, VP HR and now SVP HR...and all without application, competition, skill, experience or knowledge except for the little gained during her meteoric and rapid rise. AND during the last recruitment freeze, she employed her husband in a managerial position aswell. AND she is the one who is suposidly the gatekeeper to fairness and equity! Do as I say not as I do...... Maybe this will give you a hint.

So if you are thinking of joining EK, remember, it has many good points like vacancies, but, many in managerial positions are unfortunately incompetent and inexperiences, hence rule through fear. It is a command and control culture you will be entering where unfortunately small minded politics over rides the larger interestes of the business. So if you join, you have be told!

PS...and lets see how late T3 will be, I put my money on 2 years! Cause, total incompetence!
