NWA Vs. Emirates

I'm a NWA pilot to be furlough on the next two months, we are taking another 24% paycut and the company wants more.

I have an interview with emirates next month but they ask for my resignation.

I wonder if it will be worth it to resing NWA and go there and start all over ( still have 24 years to go ) or just wait and see how the bankruptcy plays out and hope for a not to lengthy recall.

The problem I see is recall to what ? $ 50 an hour and sit on the right seat for ever.

To tell you the truth I'm getting scare about all the negative information on these Forums, about Emirates ( housing, Days off ect)

Are there any Furlough US pilots out there that have made the switch ?

Might be worth posting this in the Terms and Endearment forum as this is more for those trying to get where you are.

Good Luck

Find a job that does not require you to resign...:ok:

Zazillo,

Conduct a search on this forum as well as on Flightinfo.com for a guy called Typhoonpilot. He is a furloughed USAirways pilot who now flies for Emirates - he can give you the scoop. At the end of the day, never trust anything Emirates says - they can change the terms they give you at will. Dubai is a great place, but I would be concerned about permanently resigning from NWA.

I know that Jet Blue and Air Tran are hiring in the States - I suggest you actively apply to those carriers as well... Good luck - and contact Typhoonpilot using the Search function (I've seen him on Flightinfo.com quite a bit too).

Here I am

Emirates has a few furloughed pilots from U.S. carriers, which include TWA (oops AA), United, and USAirways. They have a larger number that left their legacy carrier when they were in no danger of a furlough. Odd as that sounds to some of the posters here on Pprune, they saw something more appealing at Emirates than what they had at their legacy carrier.

As it appears you haven't even been to Dubai yet and are a ways off from a job offer, I would come to Dubai and judge for yourself. Ask hard questions when you are here and make sure you get all the information. Relocating to the desert is no small career change so you'll want to think it through.

If you look at all the other jobs out there Emirates stacks up pretty well by comparison. Yes, there are some issues but for the most part you can have a pretty decent life in Dubai.

Just a thought, but SQ and SQ Cargo are also hiring. Singapore is much better than DXB, especially if you're married.

Forgive a non-pilot sticking his oar in, but could someone elaborate on how furloughing works in the US? I take it (maybe wrongly?) from the above that when furloughed you can go and get another job to pay the bills, and I suppose if a recall comes then you have a choice of turning it down (which would be taken as a resignation I guess?) or resigning from your new employer?

Just interested as I have seen the term around here a lot, but realised I don't really understand what it means in practice.

Thanks.

You might also give Continental a try......don't know about the resignation issue.........but hiring 60 per month for the future year anyway. Good Luck

Zazillo,
Typhoon is correct, but IF its at all possible get 2 letters, one allowing you back the other showing youve resigned.

We have several here in that situation, cant say if US or not but it happens for sure have flown with 2-3 recently.

Come and have a look around, make an informed decision and best of luck CX cargo and Cargolux hiring as well.
