The travel staff rate!!!
Whilst hunting for a campervan in New Zealand a couple of days ago, I happen to ask if they did an travel industry rate - reply was:
"...I am sorry we do not give any discounts for airline employees - in fact I have never understood why we should. Would I get a cheap flight to Europe with xxxx air?....." Now, this guy is probably independent and would understand this reply, But why do we get discounts on everything these days from the usual hotels/hire cars etc too the not so usual of car/house insurance etc.???? What do the company's get out of it!??? |
Same reason the bus driver gets a free plate of chips when he takes a busload into the transport cafe

Many companies outside of aviation, arrange group discounts for staff at an enormous range of places. Staff get a discount and companies get a (slightly) assured line of customers. It's mutually beneficial and can be good 'perk'.

Aircrew get discount at the florida theme parks. In return we recommend them to all our PAX. Good business if you ask me.

Same reason people ask for upgrades people want more for less, also if you don't ask you most certainly don't get.

So why do easyJet staff get all the 'usual' industry discounts, but non-easyJet staff do not get any discount with the orange lot??????

By 'usual industry discounts' you mean touchdown and airperx. These can easily be bettered with a little net surfin. Easyjet staff don't get special rates with any other carrier. You're not missing out, Buster. I'm sure you also know by now that our own staff travel is virtually non existent.

As we're talking about the Orange lot, it seems to be quite evident that they are not a lo-co operation anymore. How are they getting away with it? Every time I check their rates, they top BA and any other operators. Their rates today for VLC-LGW were almost double BA and Thomsonfly to Bournemouth. I haven't flown on them for years now as they charge just too much.

Easy are no different from any other low cost operator, if you book 3 months in advance you'll get a good rate, if you try and book the day before you'll pay the full rate. In all sectors of industry it's supply and demand, if you have a product someone wants, you don't have to to offer discounts to sell it. Personally, I very rarely use the extensive staff travel discounts I can get, largely because, (with few exceptions), they are all on a standby basis. For a few £s less, I can get a confirmed seat with most low cost operators if I know where I want to go far enough in advance. If it's short notice travel, I can fly nearly anywhere with BA on their World Traveller tickets, which cost a little bit more than standby tickets, but provide a confirmed seat and full service. (Even it is in a camper van:p ) |
