For "pilot" obviously read "captain".

In the wide world of joe public, first and second officers are not "pilots". They are co-pilots, and are widely believed merely to provide secretarial and moral support to "the pilot" who is the only one qualified to fly.

Hence the horrified and hysterical press reports in the infrequent event that a "co-pilot" has to land the plane when a captain becomes incapacitated.

I imagine the waves of mirth that will rock the professional pilot community upon reading this!

That figure comes from a sample of 68 'commercial pilots', which is hardly representative. The category 'pilot' (154 respondents) has an average salary of £51,000. Interestingly, 'test pilots' (2 respondents) apparently have an average salary of £21,000. GIGO!
