Illusory spot on.

wobble2plank 13th June 2008 08:15

I can't believe that this 'must hire sim' mentality is going on still! :ugh:

Read back in the forest of posts on this thread and you will find similar comments from various people of the same ilk as Shaka Zulu and Illusory all through these posts.

The company DOESN'T expect you to come out of flying a 320 or 737 or TP and be able to fly the 747 perfectly! If they did then they wouldn't have to bother with the little niggle of ZFT training on it. What they do want to see is how you interact with your companion and the simulated CC in a scenario where you are put under pressure. Do you go silent? Do you start shouting? Will you forget to inform the other parties such as ATC or the CC? Will you forget to follow the routing? Almost always there will be a hold point or a waypoint you have to achieve en-route, the 'malfunction' will start shortly before that.

'Plane, Path, People!', a good BA moniker! Is the AC safe and flyable in the condition it is in? Are we safe and controlled on the heading we are on? Are we flying away from our possible destination field at a great rate of knots??? Have I told everyone, concisely and calmly what the problem is? The consequences? The time frame available? Finally the conclusion as to what we are about to do?

How you approach the above 'scenario' is what is assessed. To be honest they don't really care if you can or can't land it, it is the crew interaction, leadership if running the show, support and helpful guidance if supporting the leader, that they are looking for.

Personally, I wouldn't waste the cash on a Sim.

Enjoy

Personally I would... horses for courses!

Knee Trembler 13th June 2008 11:38

Hi all,

I just wanted to add my two penneth to the discussion on the sim.

My experience was a little different to that mentioned above. I had a pretty rough time in the sim, basically starting with a heavy landing (which broke the sim:( ). Notionallythis isn't assessed - but...!

We had been told in advance that we would be assessed to different standards (I am a short haul capt and my colleague was leaving the RAF) and so wasn't too surprised that he was accepted and I received a PFO.

I would have liked to know exactly what the reason was, however despite accepting the offer of feedback, I never heard any more from BA. I am pretty sure that CRM wasn't a factor though as we worked very well together and managed all of our checklists and kept to the numbers in the briefing (ish ;-))

In the end I wished I had had an hour or so, beforehand, to get used to the handling. With a 20 minute flight I was so pre-occupied that I had less capacity than I would have liked. Maybe the problem was perceived to be elsewhere, but I have the impression that the flying let me down.

On a general note, I'm not sure that I would volunteer to fly from the left seat again as I also felt this went against me (again I don't know for sure). However, a colleague, who I know to be an excellent pilot, recently failed the sim assessment at Condor after asking to fly from the left seat. In his case he was told in the debrief that this had not gone down well!

For anyone bored / desperate enough to read back, my full post was around October last year.

Good luck to all.

KT :)

Getting an hour or two in the 744 sim beforehand can ONLY be an advantage. As the previous poster says, you don't wanna go into something new for a 20min check & have to worry about making a balls of flying the thing. You aren't really being assessed on flying it but if you make a cock of it that doesn't look good!! I assume you'll have no automatics either so don't forget how that will increase the workload significantly along with the 'one off check' pressure!! I know what i'll be doing if i get a check...........

Getting Back To The Subject

As I have previously stated Localiser started and extreamly useful thread under the title

British Airways DEP Selection - THE lowdown (merged)
.

Can we please get back to the subject of the contents of the selection day and the nitty gritty stuff that we are all interested in i.e.

New Interview Questions
Interview Themes (safety, customer service etc etc)
Group exersize
Maths/Verbal reasoning hints/tips

By all means post info about the sim profile. If anyone wants to have sim practice or a slanging match about whether or not it is the right thing to do then how about setting up another thread??

Spatial Recognition

Hello.

Were there many spatial recognition or visual estimation type questions in the test ?

Thanks

ATC83 16th June 2008 09:51

There are a couple..the one main one I can remember is the friend or foe - big aeroplanes are friend and small aeroplanes are foe. You have to fire everytime you see an enemy. It gets harder as the difference between the size gets less and less. Have a look at cockpitweb for a good heads up

The sim is on the 747 - why are you booking the 737?

evian 21st June 2008 10:42

I went on 17th seems like 5 out of 9 so far have got through to sim. Also know of someone who got through who went on 16th and someone on the 18th, phone calls seemed to be on the 19th at 5pm or soon after,

Good luck to all!

ChocksAwayUK 21st June 2008 12:00

I was there on the 16th - no call, email or letter yet. But I suppose I shouldn't be getting my hopes up as it sounds like the calls have already been made.

Anyone know if they leave a message if your phone is off? What time were calls made (yesterday presumably)?

zim2uk 21st June 2008 12:03

Anyone from the 18th heard yet?

Verbal Reasoning

Morning all,

Could you shed any further light on the Verbal Reasoning. What Kind of questions were they? Could you compare them with examples you had seen previously?

Cheers

Thanks Baron. So are all the questions of that nature, ie read a passage and answer a few questions on it? Just wondering where to focus my limited time.

Looking at the numerical reasoning questions on that link, there are a few Data interpretation questions, has anyone seen these crop up at all on the day?

Cheers

Maths Test

Hi

With regard to the Maths test - it hasn't changed at all! I was given fairly reliable information about what was in it from someone that went last year. The information was all accurate this year. It means, that you do not need to worry about techincal questions, data interpretation or anything else like that. What other people have written on here is correct. It is simple maths with the challenge being the time pressure and the time pressure alone. You need not worry about the content but just practice simple arithemtic, quickly and in your head.
