Part time contracts - what does yours look like?

Hello again,

Forgive my ignorance , but I wonder if it would be in our interest to share with each other what your part-time arrangements look like?

I am nearly forty and aiming to enter the airlines and looking at doing it part time in the long term as I'm not getting any younger!

Thanks in advance!

FlightDetent 28th Mar 2019 17:21

I am afraid that any part-time comes only after years of full availability had been provided. Trying the ACMI providers is a way, but then the arrangement is 4 days home in 28 days during the summer 5 months and mostly unpaid for the rest of the year.

I’m 75% PT with my UK based loco.

I do 3weeks on/1week off. (In my 3weeks on I do 13days work and 8days off). I get 75% of the leave normally offered to those that are full time.

I’d been with the company less than 1 year when offered this contract.

no long wait for me.

Loco as well. 7 days on and 7 days off. 71.6% pay. In the normal world a week consists of 7 days.
So you have a weekly repetative pattern. Every second weekend is yours. Just like normal people.
Great for social and family life. Plus no jetleg and no hotel life.......

Downside is pay. 28.4% less pay in the same 30 days of the month. Days at home while everybody is to
school or working. Not earning money means spending money. So it is more than 28.4% paycut....

But than again. "Part time is the new money".....,,,

Just over 70% part time UK based TP operator on 5 days on 5 days off. You do pay for it in terms of your wage and most days tend to be fairly long as you can't as easily reach the FTL limits unlike the full timers. However, personally it's well worth it for lifestyle and the simple ability to plan in advance. The problem is getting it - I had to wait 18 months, but unfortunately at the moment part time is not being granted here until further notice - case of right place right time, like everything else in this industry!

Silver lining, happy to hear.

UK Red and Yellow Express package have 5-6 different part time packages down to 50% with a significant amount of Captains on PT and a handful of FO's using it.
If your a commuter you have to go on a P/T contract when you join (get more days off in the month rather than leave)

skianyn vannin 29th Mar 2019 10:37

Orange loco here, UK based. I'm on 50% 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. In the 2 weeks on I work 9 days, so effectively only working 9 days in every 28. Random rostering applies in the 2 weeks on with preference bidding for lates or earlies.

MCDU2 29th Mar 2019 11:16

My company loves part time. They get to screw you over with a higher pro rata amount of work than if you were full time. If they could roster it you would do 900hrs in 80% of the time. So the people on part time often feel more tired than the rest of us working a full roster and are down 20% of the pay.

Nightstop 30th Mar 2019 11:09

UK LoCo fixed pattern 50% part time i.e. 4 on/4 off/5 on/15 off. So, 9 days work in every 28. 14 days annual Leave which I usually use as single days of Leave to reduce the 5 day block to 4. Preference bidding in advance for 2 sector late duties normally successfull, if not I can normally get what I want using the Open Flights system (uncrewed duties).

2 weeks on/off with contractual minimum 5 days off in your 14 plus 23 days annual leave on top. Option to effectively pick and choose some overtime if it suits you too.

Unsurprisingly, the happiest folk where I work all seem to work a loose variation of the above!

Hi guys, would any of you be able to share the particulars of the company you work for. If you prefer you could pm me. Cheers

burnable gomi 4th Apr 2019 03:13

For the part time rosters do you have equivalent percentage hour caps too or is it just days? ie for a 50% roster are you capped at 450 hours and for a 75% roster are you capped at 675 hours?

How long would it take to get a part time roster at Easyjet as a DEC in LGW?

boxmover 4th Apr 2019 09:35

Depends totally on the airline. At the one I work for you work as hard as full time pilots on a working day. At some airlines you get shafted with all the high hours days and so work harder per day.
But
You still get more days off per month part time.

Clandestino 24th Apr 2019 15:26

West Asia LoCo, 90% of the work for 90% of the pay, meaning I get 7 days off in a row every month in lieu of usual two weeks annual vacation. Comprehensive array of ID agreements and living two block hours away from the base helps a lot. No reduction in hours cap or overtime threshold. Contract was the same from the day one but then I joined as a direct entry non-type rated captain and had to work first two years in the base a bit further afield.

simmple 24th Apr 2019 19:48

80% was fine in the beginning but soon became more work than 100% for less pay.
seemed the part timers were rostered first with all the longer duties, whatever left then shared between the full timers who needed less work as they were 100%!
80% meant 80% of working days not 80% of workload

A business where a 35 years old man feels like he should be part time means something is very wrong indeed

Typhoon Surfer 25th Apr 2019 03:37

Same story at the Hong Kong carrier I used to work for. They initially refused to introduce commuting rosters, so all the expats started to leave once they had a better offer, and few qualified pilots wanted to join on their roster terms. So they were ultimately forced to recognise they had no choice, and they introduced a limited 'lifestyle roster' (refused to call it a commuting roster so they could avoid having to subsidise or provide tickets). They did of course reduce the pay, and they also reduced the already sub standard Annual Leave. However they did not pro-rata the flying hours! They just worked the commuters harder and got the same productivity as the full timers. Believe it or not that suited many of the commuters because flight pay was an element of salary, so those guys wanted to 'make up their hours' to compensate for the pay deduction. It resulted in the worst of both worlds for those who didn't want to kill themselves with work. Great deal for the company though....you had to wonder why they resisted the idea so long. It's all about control really, that's all.
