MAJOR OR Captain.

I want to throw a big question, what is your opinion on this? Move into a Major or continue in your/other Lowfare airline and become cpt.(or continue as CPT)

We can divide into 2 or 3 categories.

1.-Cadet pilot, this profile I see it clear -> major airline, develop your career, become cpt in the future and lot of stability in your life.

2.-Experience FO. the options are to become cpt as fast as you can in a LOCO and then do what you want to do.....

3.-CPT, do what you want if you economy permits. But going in to a major means lost your captaincy and start as Fo with less salary most of the times.

what do you think?

Never reject or postpone a command upgrade opportunity. Never.

True, I always jump at them.

Wise words, you jump off the big roundabout and you might wait 20 years for another chance to get back on.

Personal choice, but in my opinion:

It's better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb, than the top of one you don't

Better to have a smaller house in a good area than a big house in a crappy area..

Move on to a better Career type airline or major as soon as possible, forget the Command, etc. Focus on Terms, Conditions, Culture, feedback from other aviators. The blue chip airlines are aways worth shooting for, even if at some point you decide to change track. The culture and Pilot voice and representation make for a positive 21st Century Airline

Major? Do you mean such as Lufti group, KLM, BA, AF?

low fare airline? Do you mean RYR, EZY, Eurowings etc or are we talking about smaller airlines?

My view is get yourself into a large airline be it major or low cost. If you are in one of those already and command comes along then take it. Don’t jump out of a loco with a command to go elsewhere as a FO. Not worth it unless you are hell bent on long haul and are prepared to take a big pay cut. The conditions are no better in some majors v locos either.

Stupid generalization.

Are you suggesting that a 23 years old french guy, given the choice, should choose to upgrade in let’s say Ryanair or Wizzair instead of joining Air France?

Same goes for a dutch or german guy, for KLM or LH of course.

You have to think long term.

It depends on what the individual wants. At such a young age I would also join LH or Virgin and happily wait for my turn. If it's our Alitalia then err... No. But that will never happen anyway :uhoh:

Yes something like this, to chose between an Airfrance/TAP/Lufth vs EZY or RYr. For an early 30 years old FO.

bex88 9th Nov 2018 20:26

If you are at EZY or RYR as a captain in a base you want in your early to mid 30’s if it were me I would happily stay put. If it’s about money it’s no contest. If you must do Long haul then you must move. That however comes at a cost. A vastly reduced salary and years and years (most of the time and in most cases) as a FO. Nothing wrong with that it just depends on what you want. I know a number of guys who are very very happy in the locos. I also have friends who are in their 40’s in the majors and are very happy to kick back on a long haul fleet and never want a command. They work part time and love the lifestyle.

Sounds like you have to make a decision. I would start with job security, then look at lifestyle and then money. That’s me now though, it’s not always been in that order.

Personal choice,

For me; major.

It was the better solution for quality of life.

TowerDog 10th Nov 2018 02:41

I went to a major, but was bored after 15 years in the right seat including 4 years furloughed.
Enjoyed cargo and non-sceds in the left seat: Less money, less benefits but more fun. (And more work)
There is no right answer in this business, whatever you choose could be right after 5 years, or very wrong..
