Where Could I Go; Ex-Mil FJ?

Hello all,

I've been retired from the RAF for around a year. Really miss flying, and am considering jumping from an executive job back into the cockpit. I have 2500 hours but almost all fast jet with absolutely zero ME time, so I'd be applying with the typical ATPL theory pass, CPL/ME IR & MCC. Obviously no TR. No recent colleagues have gone into the airlines so not sure about current options.

I'm not sure if it's the right move. After so long in the military, the stability of living at home is wonderful. Initial impressions are that the only jobs for non-TR pilots are on tiny salaries and involve distant bases. I took a decent pay rise on leaving the military and I don't necessarily want to throw it all away, but would certainly accept a few years of lower earnings if there was potential in the future. Bearing in mind I've retired once so don't want to necessarily have to wait 20 more years before a command opportunity, or the chance to work as a trainer or examiner (was an ex-multiple A2 QFI, IRET, CFS Examiner etc).

Are there actually any jobs out there that ex-FJ guys can be competitive in, without needing to move to another country? Very aware of my limits being purely FJ, but feel like I'm sitting on a lot of useful experience and would love to use it again. Completely clueless about the options; any advice would be much appreciated.

Same case here. Age of 33 and no ME hours. But in my case still active with limited potential and unsure financial future. Moving away is not a big issue despite the family status(wife and 2 kids). Would any company consider us as applicants for their TR/cadet programms?

Try Ryanair. I think they’re short of a few pilots at the moment.

Many of your ex-RAF colleagues have been and continue to be very successful at Jet2.com. Try checking out their recruitment pages or call their recruitment team for a chat.

You've had some of the best flying to be had in the world, you have increased your pay on leaving the RAF and "After so long in the military, the stability of living at home is wonderful." Why on earth would you knock that on the head to tool about in a 737 at 4 in the morning? Make a lot of money and get involved in some type of GA, aeros maybe?
Best of luck.

I think the average fast jet pilot might find the airline life a little bit restrictive. It certainly isn’t the job it was 10/15 or 20 years ago. As the above posters said, there are other jobs out there, corporate flying, for example. Netjets seems to attract a lot of ex mil for example. Maybe time to leverage the old fast jet boys network methinks?

There’s a lot of recruitment out there in most sectors. Perhaps have a think about the sort of flying (which really means the sort of lifestyle alongside the aviation) you fancy and target that - it sounds as though you’re not desperate for a job to pay the bills. Speak to anyone you know in the airlines. If you’ve got a licence and a medical you’re well in with a chance. My MD, DFO and Trg Mgr are all pure FJ! Good luck with whatever you choose.

Recently left RAF now in TUI

I recently left the RAF to fly with TUI. Give me a PM if you want to chat about it.
