Ezy Portugal DEC - Lisbon/Oporto

Hi folks, I've got a DEC selection for one of said Portuguese bases. Can anyone please shed light on the following if it's not too much trouble please;

1. The updated salary is €144500 + 20% in duty pay amounting to €173500 making a monthly take home of £6420 or €6940 after 52% tax, is this accurate?
2. Is it mostly 4 sector days?
3. What is the roster pattern, is it fixed 5/4 or what is the random pattern?
4. Is Oporto the quieter base.
5. Is it mostly Portuguese flight deck?
6. Why are they always struggling for crews?
7. How is the lifestyle there?
8. Are both Lis and Opo secure ezy bases for the future?

Hi,

1. €144,500 is the gross salary including all payments like flight pay and the On Target Earning (OTE) of 10% of the basic salary etc. While 52% is the highest rate I don't believe that anyone pays this as the effective rate on the whole amount. Tax levels vary depending on personal circumstances. It would be well worth contacting an accountant for a simulation depending on your personal circumstances.

2. It's a mixture. Very, very roughly I'd say about 60/40 split. The roster is truly variable so it can depend.

3. There is no roster pattern, it is variable. Generally blocks of three off but it can vary. The CLA contains the possibility to have 5/4 with a pay decrease. It won't be available until the base is fully crewed.

4. Yes OPO is at the moment IMHO, however some of the days are very long indeed.

5. No quite a mix. Many are coming through from the Portuguese flight schools.

6. Variety of reasons. One of them being the company is very selective and particular about DEC recruitment. To their credit they won't drop the standard to crew the bases. They have a very small pass rate, I've heard 5-10%. The contract in the past has not been nearly as good as elsewhere in the network so upgrades haven't been coming. Taxes are also very high for those resident in Portugal. The new CLA has improved the gross pay.

7. It's quite a pleasant place to live. It's safe and clean for a big city. Rents are reasonable by most european city prices. The climate is very pleasant in the summer and the winter is mild although it rains a lot. Private health care is excellent. There's a lot of natural beauty and beaches within close range and the cost of living is quite reasonable compared to much of Europe.

8. Hard to answer in that you are trying to forecast the future. What you have to understand is that this is a business, if a base doesn't perform financially in the long run it could be closed, this has happened not just at easyJet but other LoCo airlines. It's only opinion but nothing I have seen would indicate this to be the case, there seems to be expansion ahead.

It's a friendly airline in general and the aircrew tend to be open and approachable. If you are seriously thinking of working in Portugal I would encourage you to contact the Union (SPAC) and ask to be put in touch with line pilots for the inside line.

Best of luck.

Hi,

Great information, thank you for sharing it. May i ask if you are DEC based in Portugal?

I was wondering if you were getting some sort of pension/retirement while based there. there might not be private pension like in UK but maybe some sort of governement funded retirement plan?

Also would you know what would be the tax scheme for a non resident? For example based in LIS or OPO and commuting to France or Italy on the days off. What would be the tax paid in Portugal and the part paid in the resident country. I know it's a long stretch but maybe you are in this situation or know some colleagues doing the same.

Thanks in advance

3. 5/4 is available in Lisbon. It might be worth noting that the current CLA doesn't have any language for a pay decrease for the 5/4 option.

There is a small payment each year to a private pension fund at the moment but from next year there is no company scheme just a cash payment in lieu. It wasn't something that was pushed for in the CLA for a number of valid reasons. The state pension, as it stands, should be quite good but like most state pensions it's difficult to see how it will be sustained. It would be wise to plan your own pension and if the state pension comes through it would be the cherry on the cake.

You really need to get tax advice from a professional. There is so much misinformation online. Cross border tax issues are extremely complicated.

Correct, my mistake. The base does need to be fully crewed however. So it is technically available in both bases.

All this is based on a knowledge of OPO mainly:

1. Portuguese tax varies depending on whether you're married or not and if you have kids. E.g. Married with 2 kids and your partner NOT working is 33% (plus the 11% social security). But if you're single and no kids then it's 39% (plus the 11% social security). These figures are based on the full time captain salary money. Not all of the money is taxable though. I believe that in Yr1 you'd be looking at €70-75k net on the worst case local tax situation. After 5 years in the company (10% loyalty bonus threshold) with the new CLA you're looking at €80-85k net annually, and with the partner and 2 kids situation you're looking at €90k net. Even then, the Portuguese tax authorities give rebates for you spending money and recording it using your NIF number (to attempt to reduce the cash in hand business) so you can expect a bit more.

2. OPO is mostly 2 sector days on earlies and 4 sector days on lates. LIS is more varied.

3. 5/4 pattern is available when bases fully crewed with no salary reduction. So it's already available in LIS but OPO still needs a good 6+ captains. Flexi roster in OPO leads to most blocks having 3 days off with 3-5 days on. BUT the leave and guaranteed day off systems can be manipulated into giving decent holidays and regular breaks in the work schedule that seem to work nicely for all pilots spending the majority of their time near the base...it's not a great base for commuters.

4. Yes. Because RYR have all the short flights sewn up (LIS, FAO and all of Spain) it means there less room for the roster to be "optimised", where as in LIS the rostering computer can add a MAD or a BOD onto another 2 sectors without much hassle. There are long duties in OPO (11+ hours) but with this comes less actual working days in the plane.

5. Really wide range of nationalities. No current Portuguese captains in OPO and only a handful of Portuguese first officers.

6. The old contract/CLA turned almost everyone off. Even the new one doesn't match up to other airlines and bases in Europe. Only you can decide if €6-7k per month is enough to live on comfortably.

7. In OPO I would say excellent, most pilots not commuting live within 15 minutes of the airport and traffic at the times of work is fairly quiet. Standbys are almost always days off. Hardly any delays (no flights to UK airspace helps). Earliest start is 5am and latest landing is 11.15pm. So all this maximises time away from "work". The weather is of course better in LIS, providing you can handle the hotter summer temps. If mid-high 20's is more your style then OPO is better.

8. If it's making money and it can be crewed then EZY will keep bases open. There are naturally concerns that if OPO constantly struggles to attract captains then it will close, but PAX revenue and loads are excellent.

There are recruitment open days in Porto and Lisbon on the 16th and 17th of August respectively. Info on the locations on their Facebook easyJet careers page.
