Standby duty conditions

Hi All,
My company is trying to impose airport standby duties on us without any standby duty pay. There is no mention of standby Ts&Cs in our contracts. I'd be interested to hear from fellow pilots what the conditions for standby pay are in your companies?

Thank you in advance. :ok:

No need for the "fight the battle against exploitation" your post was good without it. However, with the comment in mind how about the fact you get a basic salary or have you forgot about that minor point?:\

Flybe got duty pay all the time on duty, including AS. If I recall correctly you also got a disruption payment if you got called from the standby and finished two, or four, hours after the original finish time.

Mr Angry, you have a fair point if the OP is being paid a basic salary, but what if he is a contractor? I think a certain company's contractor cabin crew go unpaid for ASBY, and have no idea why they turn up for it.

Here, Standby duty is calculated as duty time. Every hour (or fraction thereof) of Standby at home counts as half its duration in duty time, Standby at the airport is credited fully and unfactored. The such accumulated duty time of course is followed by the required subsequent rest period as if it was a flying duty.

As all the flight, standby or other duty time is accumulated over the month, a standby duty will only have effects on the pay if the overtime threshold is crossed.

This system is considered acceptable and fair in my company.

That's the way home standby should be conducted :D

Mr Angry, in response to "how about the fact you get a basic salary or have you forgot about that minor point?" - Going by the same logic, why do companies all over the world have standby pay, sector pay, per-diems, overnight pay ...etc...etc? Basic pay makes up a portion of your overall pay with all the additional duty pay making up the rest of your overall package.

Thank you for your replies guys. Any more details of standby conditions from anyone else would be much appreciated. Thanks. :O

I've never done an airport stby, we get duty pay when on stby so particularly enjoy when I wake up fresh as a daisy and haven't received a call.
There are some duty limitations on start after a stby, within a couple of hours and some FTL restrictions.

Some companies don't pay anything for sby at home. If on airport sby, at the very least, you should get an appropriate meal allowance.

"Sector pay", "per diem", "overnight pay" ... Are these not all one and the same thing and basically boil down to an "away from base allowance" for subsistence or whatever?

Office staff need to go in to the airport for duty daily, they are at home base so no allowance is applicable but should they be sent away home from base then, of course, they should be paid an "away from base allowance".

Why is it so many aircrew believe they live by a different set of rules to the rest of the human race, whether it be a classroom training duty, an admin day, or indeed a home base airport standby, why do aircrew expect an addition payment to their salary every time they set foot from their front door heading in the direction of their employer?

Here pilots don't have airport standby, although it is apparently being reconsidered. Cabin crew get an allowance for airport standby.

Home standby is a max of eight hours if not called, there is no additional duty pay. We have two hours to report. All standby hours are counted as duty hours in full.

The above seems fair enough to me as the majority of our pay is our basic salary.

latetonite 18th Jun 2014 14:50

Never heard of an airport stby for pilots.
But I an sure you mentioned this issue when you signed the contract, no?

Denti 18th Jun 2014 19:31

We don't do airport standby, and if so there would be no extra payment. By regulation airport standby is flight duty if called out and simply duty if not.

We have however home standby, up to 16 hours, the total of home standby and the resultant flight duty is capped at 22 hours, excluding the hours until 9AM if not called before that. Response time is one hour. And of course no extra payment either, however our base pay makes up for around 80% of our total pay.

I See the "Exploited" has been removed from the original post

Low life, are you saying your hardest working crew member is rostered 20 days off a month on average? That's very generous of your airline. Be more interesting to know their total duty hours in 12 months and actual days off...

Well, because we do...
