BALPA Direct Entry Pilot Conference
Anyone have further information on this conference. For example is it aimed at experienced pilots?
:hmm: |
|
If it isn't agencies and airlines trying to rip unemployed pilots off now our own union is charging £125 to put you in touch with airlines !!!!
Unbelievable ! When you've just lost your job forking out £125 for something like this stings !!! |
Attendance free to BALPA members
|
There are only paid places left now, so as a BALPA member I can't go unless I pay, or at least that's how it looks to me.
I couldn't have booked earlier because I don't have a roster yet. |
Of course that was my first port of call, however there is little information apart from the venue and price... was hoping there would be a profile of airlines attending, type of experienced candidates it was aimed at etc.
Thanks anyway. |
I imagine it'll be a boat load of contract outfits, parc and the like, desperately trying to tempt guys to China or Korea. :yuk:
|
Pointless in my opinion. Ok if you want to go and work abroad or live on a ****ty temp contract, or if you're unemployed of course, but for pilots at the bottom looking to move on or up it's a waste of time. Maybe BALPA should focus on trying to end the CTC cartel and think about creating real jobs in this country for our pilots. Maybe then more people might buy a ticket.
|
They are..and it's sold out.
|
There used to be a list on that website of companies attending the open day, I can't find it now but yes it was middle east airlines, Emirates was one, plus lots of contractors. I notice they say "lots of british companies have been invited". Yes they probably have, but are they attending? The distinct lack of information is very amature. Also it says they are holding it in Manchester so that it's central for all the ex bmi chaps, all well and good but what are you going to tell them they don't already know? There's no jobs in the UK because CTC are filing all the seats with aspiring pilots from the UK and every other country in the EU so you'll have to go work 5000 miles from home if you want a job. Well cheers Einstein.

My understanding was it is aimed at experienced pilots not new starters
|
The advert makes me want to heave , it uses ridiculous language , such as the following headline
The definitive event for direct entry pilot opportunities Plus the following agencies Bradair aviation consultancy Paramount Cae parc Direct personnel Flightcrewresources international Pilot career news Save your money and stay at home. What can they possibly tell you that you can't get for free by contacting them directly. I can't believe BALPA is charging to put you into contact will agencies! If you want to go to Emirates why would you not just apply directly or see one of their own FREE roadshows ! Then you could save £125 plus petrol and/or accommodation !!!! |
Bradair isn't an agency, he's a training provider so will be there with a sales pitch.
The last time I attended a BALPA employment seminar which was about 8 years ago, all the airlines that attended and made presentations told us all about how many pilots they had taken for the coming year, and that recruitment was now closed, but be sure to keep an eye on Flight International for future recruitment. It was a bit of a waste of time. It may be different nowadays. |
It looks on current evidence that only Emirates is there to represent the "Airlines"... Ironic really as they rule their roost with a no-compromising attitude towards any sort of union representation!
Anyway, I digress; with no civilised carriers represented directly, seems a futile exercise. |
I have a place, and a day off, and 3000 Dash 8 hours.
Should I even get out of bed?:ugh: |
Flyingcamel... Depends where you are driving from.... I suspect it won't be a problem cost-wise if you are working, but as it is aimed at unemployed pilots, they will have a decision to weigh up the cost against the usefulness. :ugh:
|
Cheers for the advice Vasi. Was only really going to go for the talks on becoming an expat etc for info. Can't see that any of the agencies will want Dash drivers. Think I shall surrender my free ticket to (hopefully) someone unemployed and jet rated.
I feel BALPA have been a bit disingenuous about this event by calling it 'Direct Entry Pilot' recruitment day, when it seems it should be called 'Unemployed/redundant, jet rated pilot Agency liaison day'. Best of luck to all that are going that need the work, I hope you get something approaching what you want/need out of this. FC |
its another balpa con. save your money.
all the info can be found on the internet via the agency sites. |

How does one enter indirectly?
|
How does one enter indirectly? |
Was anyone else as disappointed with the "definitive pilot recruitment event" as I was?
 |
Glad I didnt pay, was good for the free food (except the chicken) good oppetunity for networking though and off load some CVs
|
You did pay...you pay through the nose every month and get nothing for it!
|
Oh contraire, Camel old chap. As you can see PARC have been recruiting Dash8 captains for nipples for several hundred years.
I am sure they would bite your arm off.... |
I don't see how 'networking' helps with agencies....
Do you have a starship rating ? tick Do you have 500 hrs PIC on starship ? tick All the networking they need. Or in my case " yes korean will take you with 2000hrs P1". 400 forms /4 months later....."oh sorry Korean need 3000 hrs..." Personally I conclude forget Japan/China/Korea, it's a waste of ....... time even applying. |
How many BRITISH airlines turned out for BALPA's big day?
|
A big fat NONE........ahhh but it's ok, because we invited LOADS :ugh::ugh:
|
The real point is that BALPA clearly don't have the connections and goodwill within BRITISH airlines to have any positive influence.
What on earth do they do with the £5.5 million they collect and spend every year? |
I was on the verge of paying to attend this event but a last minute engagement came up, I'm thanking my lucky stars it did! A friend of mine who attended confirmed what is being said above - a total waste of time and money which BALPA should be ashamed to have supported. In regard to the Emirates representative, I believe he spent 50% of his presentation talking about himself and his experience didn't he?
|
Goldcup, people aren't stupid. They don't need a BALPA showcase to tell them what way the wind is blowing. However I doubt there would be much bitching if they hadn't bothered setting anything up. BALPA have more pressing matters that they should be devoting their efforts towards, instead of advertising a 'quality' careers event which can be construed as nothing more than an attempt appease the poor buggers at bmi baby; they aren't stupid either. From what I am told there was nothing revealed here that they wouldn't have known about already.
If anyone's at fault, it's not the people who turned up to this event expecting something; it's BALPA for putting together a careers event based on nothing more than hope. It irritates me that I paid a subscription to this lot for nearly two years. I joined a union fit for purpose, should've done it much sooner. |
One bit of good news !
