What's the best 9-5 flying job in Europe?
I, like many others in this industry, ask myself if I can continue to work early mornings, late at night, weekends and holidays for the next 30 years. Having said that, I don't feel ready to hang up my headset just yet...
I'm interested to know which are the best flying jobs out there - if you want to put your life and family before your pay packet. Let's face it, there's not too many airlines who are happy to keep their aircraft parked until the sun comes up, and have them tucked in in time for supper so is corporate or GA the answer? Cheers.:ok: |
If I were you I would hang up the head set and go searching for the Loch Ness Monster, you are more likely to succeed.
Seriously though I've never heard of any 9-5 flying jobs anywhere. You just can't make money from an airplane if it's sitting on the ground for 16 hours a day. I consider my hours civilised because I seldom encroach on the WOCL. Let me know if you find one though. :ok: |
Probably high seniority in an airline where you can bid for your trips. That way you get the choice of what trips you do and I guess that goes for your report and checkout times.
That said... the benefits to not heading to/from work/supermarket/etc. at the same time as everybody else 80% of the time far outweigh, in my opinion, the irritations of missing 50% of the things I want to attend. So the other option might be to go part-time in your current role, if you can. |
Flying Instructor at one of the big Commercial Flying Schools (not the Clubs because you'll be working every weekend!).
|
Twin Otter at Loganair. No Sunday flying, very civilised hours during the rest of the week.
|
or the otters operating the island hops in the Maldives - can only operate during daylight hours so even though you may get some early mornings you won't be staying on too late
|
Flying King-Airs out of Oslo, Norway with Lufttransport.
5-2-5-16, no flying on weekends and holidays and no nightflying:) Pay is also very good.... |
Well, it was bmi based at East Midlands.
Businessmen don't fly at night or weekends! |
What a great thread, should be renamed as Dream Job!! LOL
How about helicopter flying for some mega rich family? |
Not quite 9-5, but try to find a short-haul operator whose main base is at an airport with a curfew.
|
Sounds like a good idea, however quite often is not as shorthaul airlines at airports with a night curfew find ways around that problem. Usually by having flights with departure right before the curfew starts and arrival when it is lifted again. And night flying aint nice.

Back in the days of instructing at what was then BAE Systems Jerez I used to value lightly the fact that we worked Monday to Friday, 9 - 5 with a bit of flex either way as suited, stacked early on a Friday to the bar and had every public holiday off. All I wanted was an airline job on a jet and a Captains wage.
Now I've had those things for some years all I want is a little job in the sun buzzing around in a light aircraft, maybe teaching some bright young things how to fly, with every weekend off and a good nights sleep every night. It's a funny old world. WWW |
Flying sea planes from Long Island to Manhattan. First flight departed at 0700 with two round trips. Off for the rest of the day until 1630 for two more round trips. Done for the day.
Some times there may be a sightseeing trip. Best part... uniform were khaki short (pants if it was cool) and a polo shirt, and flip flops:ok:. Properly attired for the margaritas after work.:ok::ok: |
Once upon a time I would have said Gama Air Ambulance in Scotland on the BE20 (well, not 9 to 5 but fun)
NOT ANYMORE THOUGH :(:(:( |
I guess I'll just have to keep buying the lottery tickets then...:hmm:
|
Just seen this thread.
Perhaps Eastern based at Teesside? Not the best money in the world but seems like a pretty good existence. |

I guess pleasure flights isn't a bad option. London heli tours or something similar?
|
Friend flies for Scilly Islands in the twotter. Seems to love his job and all the hand flying he does!
|
I think you will find Eastern left Teesside (Durham tees valley) some time ago. |
