Tax in Portugal
 

Hello All.

I'm new here and hope I've posted in the right place.

Does anyone out there know much about any favourable tax rates for aircrew in living and working in Portugal?
Situation: easyJet is opening a base in Lisbon, contract isn't great, info on tax scant.

Any NetJets pilots care to comment as I believe their operations and payroll is based out there?

Bearing in mind that Portugal has received bailout money, tax benefits are beind reduced severely by their fiscal programme, very hard austerity measures being put in place at the moment and monitored by EU.

From 61 244€ to 66 045€ .................. 41,50% Tax
From 66 045€ to 153 300€ ................ 43,50% Tax
VAT increased to 23%
Pilots starting to apply to Middle East companies.
So..., African salaries, Switzerland taxes and Scandinavian prices!

How could one apply for a DEC position with easyJet in Lisbon?
I have looked in the careers section on the easyJet website but could not find something relevant. Have they delegated this to a recruiting agency?

Hello. I am interested to know about Easyjet Lisbon.
A friend said he knows someone who applied but did not pass selection.
I think they did it with Parc but I could not find any thing.
Are they still hiring.
Does any body know more about this.

Are the aircraft that are based in Portugal going to be "G" registered ? because it dose not matter if you live on Mars and respect the 90 day rule for non resident's HMRC will still want their cut.

thats not the case. All of the mainland europe bases have local contracts with tax paid in country. Currently we pay uk tax on 5% of salaries. Which is never more than the tax free allowance so no uk tax is actually paid...

In relation to taxes, that means:

if your income is 51,000, your net will be approx. 29,835 €/year (2,486 €/month)
if your income is 77,000, your net will be approx. 43,505 €/year (3,625 €/month)
if your income is 100,000, your net will be approx. 56,500 €/year (4,708 €/month)

VAT is 23%...
Auto fuel about 1,60 €/liter...
2 bedroom apartment in Lisbon about 750-1250 €/month (depending on location)...
Average meal about 15-25 €/person...

Don't forget you have also 11% Social Security to deduct as well!

Isn´t the 11% Social Security tax already included on the 41,5% and 43,5% tax respectively? :confused:

If that is the case, and using my previous examples:

if your income is 51,000, your net will be approx. 26,553 €/year (2,213 €/month)
if your income is 77,000, your net will be approx. 38,719 €/year (3,227 €/month)
if your income is 100,000, your net will be approx. 50,285 €/year (4,190 €/month)

The Social Security 11% are to be added to the 40 something of tax... Yep, it is tough in Portugal this days... So, in order to achieve a pleasant living you should be getting no less than 160 000€ gross per year, at least.

All those that take the so-called "Lisbon Contract" with EZY have no idea what they are going into. Is it true the 77 000€ a year gross I was told?

The basic salary is 77,000. The daily pay is between €120 and €160 of which part will be tax free. The annual bonus is up to 20% depending on base performance. Still not a good contract, but then no one has ever been happy with new contracts in Easyjet until things improve and then there's a race for the waiting list (Probably won't happen this time)

Some people within Easyjet are definatley taking it. The other option is usually Gatwick, which doesn't quite have the same appeal! It's a real shame about the contract, Lisbon has the potential to be a great base. Out of interest, what does a Ntejets captain take home each month in Lisbon?

The tax rates quoted by CasperFan and busav8r, are marginal rather than average rates. There is a deductable amount which increases with income (effectively a kind of tax credit). For example for incomes > €64,623 up to €150,000, the rate is 42,88% and the deductable is €7,246.40.

See Portugal Tax Rates for more details, although the precise way in which any given gross salary has its tax determined is not exactly clear.

As for Scandanavian prices: when it comes to restaurants, bars, taxis and labour-intensive services generally, Portugal is not in the same league: it's a low income country with all that that implies for some serivces costs.

Anyone who has taken a taxi or eaten out in Lisbon knows how far prices are from those in Scandinavia. It is still a lot cheaper to have a night out in Lisbon than in the London, Madrid, Milan or anywhere else in Western Europe I can remember, to be honest.

I can see people going for the sun and lifestyle in a small base like Lisbon, rather than a better pay, but hassle and rain in LGW. Too bad the suits had to take advantage of it with these appalling terms and conditions.

Same happened in Madrid when the base opened... then eventually, everyone's lack of interest in transferring changed things. But a higher number of pilots was needed in MAD. Lisbon being a small base, I doubt they will ever need to improve these t&c to get enough people for the base to run smoothly.
