I was just wondering what is happening at Thomson these days?

Any news or rumours?

Loads going on, pay deal voted down, officially undercrewed, everyones working their proverbials off.

Plus side, loads of overtime available, £350k spent in May alone.

Management have said no recruitment imminent however they are recruiting recruiters!!! :ugh:

350,000 sounds a lot but the sub chartering budget should be able to stand it, only takes a few charters of 767's to appreciate it's worth it. :\

they will never invite those that got booted out back. it would be egg on their face. why create a recruitment team as well?

There is no information at the moment on how to apply, because there is nothing to apply for. However as said above, they are working on a recruitment model and recruiting recruiters (deadline end of month), how far down the list of things to do it sits is unknown for now, but sitting on the inside, I would be surprised if there was not something this winter.

But the official line is we are correctly crewed for next year, so dont shoot me if nothing happens this year!

Another option is that they bring some more of our Canadian friends over next summer, but dont get me started on that!!

the last thing the company wants to do is recruit. for there own sake and for financial reasons. thety will look at all other options first, part time, winter off, canadians. only then recruitment will be for the smaller bases for the 73 probably on a summer only contract.

Why is BALPA allowing all these "summer contracts"? just ruining the business even more.

"Summer contracts" are reciprocal, we send 10 or so 73s + pilots out to Canada in the Winter.

The company has around 65 pilots in the holding pool for BA and other airlines. Many now realise that it's a dead end to stay with TUI so there are a lot of FO's scanning the horizon. Commands are going to be dead mens shoe's only and none before 2013 when a heavy retirement tranch occurs. That will need to be balanced with the projected fleet size decreasing year by year.

Many are also worried about the long term future of the company that is facing a buy back from Germany and a declining customer base. Draw your own conclusions. Some hope the Germans will pump money in and expand. Others realise it's unlikely.

I would say recruitment is inevitable but don't expect the same terms and conditions enjoyed by those already here. Summer contracts, lower pay scales and money purchase pensions are just the start of what you can expect. The long haul program is in decline and you won't see the 787 for many years as a new joiner.

As for why BALPA are allowing all this to happen. What do you expect them to do? The top third of the seniority list are happy so sod everyone else. The union is run by those who shout loudest for those that pay most! Sadly the union in TUI is now just an expensive irrelevance.

Yes. Joining TUI would be a step up from Ryanair, but not as big a step as you might expect.

Ella, you might want to limit your comments towards certain parts of TUI, certain TUI airlines have some of the best collective agreements in the respectable countries. I am just horrified to see BALPA run over again, and again. I am obviously not part of BALPA, but another IFALPA union which obviously has some balls.

My comments relate only to Thomson UK. Although frankly what the TUI managment want to do with the rest of the group long term is not really known.

On a personal, selfish note I see my lifestyle with Thomson, better than ANY other airline in the UK, Ive been hear 6 years. Im unlucky if I do more than 600 hours per year, including overtime, and with that get paid a handsome wage. In the last two winters I have taken the family to Scandinavia and Canada, flown to some interesting places, met some great people etc etc, so I am very happy.

But within the paragraph above also you will find the problem, 600 hours and handsome wage! I understand that that has to change, but its the rate and way things are changing that is frustrating people.

As Ella has said new entrants should not expect the same, but unlike most we are trying to hang on rather than roll over, which is part of the reason why we have just turned down a 4.9% pay rise, because of the new pay scales the company want to implement for new joiners.

With regard tro BAPLA and the Canadian contract, Tui has taken a very large stake in the Canadian tour operator and Airline, so its not just any contract, like Easy etc. And to be honest its quite complicated, but BALPA, to a large extent are in a loose, loose situation because of it, basically contract pilots or MORE redundancies.

More redundancies? How so? If you are short of pilots now what good will more redundancies do? I'm probably missing the point here :)

I would be surprised if the Airline still exists, sure there might be planes painted in TUI (or some new name) colours.Operated by Thomson Airways,
small chance, Pan European, perhaps, or an Eastern European low cost, most likely.

Pilots and Cabin crew, all employed on contract basis, 99% sure of that,pensions history.

Ops, crewing admin probably in the far east.

You might be betteroff with Ryanair?

A shame to see a former good company , Thomson and Britannia contracting, I say that as a former Engineer despite the fact I along with others were unfairly treated when it came to career aspirations in the 90s (an unofficial policy of excluding existing employees from flying Britannia/Thomson a/c, that existed at the time).

390 cruise. They sure as hell did a good job when the cloned Victor Meldrew with you! I would however take a wager with you on any of your theories.

Mr. Meldrew is only wrong on the timescale, I reckon it'll take probably 8-10 years for the destruction of the UK IT airlines. I work for your main competitor and reckon we will be in a similar position in about 5 years. Our management has already made veiled threats about a Turkish Airline, this year we have 3 jets flying company callsigns with company C-Crew at our UK bases, but are Lithuanian and Spanish owned a/c and foreign flight crewed. Ops and Crewing? Go vist HQ, its a ghost-town as almost everone has been let go. The latest wheeze is to combine the the Uk base managers with the downroute base managers, half the people twice the workload. Its relentless and this winter will almost certainly see a further contraction of the UK airline( 3 330's already going) more airframes to go is rumored.
Thompson, like us, are great operations but the world is changing, our (perceived) well feathered jobs will be the last of their kind and the future is without doubt in the hands of FR an EZ. It might be a cr#p outlook, but at least they don't have to worry about their employer going under every week.

Im starting to wish I had never asked the question now. .....
