Flybe future recruitment???

Hi all,

Being an airline recruitment geek, I have noticed the flybe recruitment page has been up dated.

It now states new entrants will have a min of 90% average in your ATPL examinations and be one stop modular etc if applying from that route.

Am I being ambitious thinking if they have taken the time to change the website some recruitment might be looming???:)

Who knows? Anyone who says anything different is only speculating. You can only second guess in this game, they'll recruit when they're good and ready.

Where did you see this new information? Link please?

It's changed in the last few days....

Why have they stipulated 90% ATPL pass rate? Because they can. They don't need lots of pilots at this time. No doubt when they do this requirement will disappear.

davepearsall 5th Sep 2010 00:23

90% averages! WOW. I have my JARs on Monday. Not likely to be getting 90s average though! :(

seasexsun 5th Sep 2010 05:38

don't forget that flybe will pay you 15% average (compared to decent airlines) ;):yuk:

GgW 5th Sep 2010 05:45

90 % ??? Would Flybe also have any set requirements on which question bank you are aloud to use.

Until very recently the website was still listing Norwich as a crew base (it closed 18 months ago) so it was certainly due for an update. The timing may not be a coincidence, however. I would not be surprised if crystal balls and tea leaves are being pored over in Exeter, and they are at least considering the possibility of significant recruitment in the not too distant.

There's a fair bit of smoke and mirrors about just where the dozens of new E175s will be based - which may not be entirely unconnected with current pay negotiations :hmm: - but wherever they end up, there is little doubt that long term plans are for serious fleet expansion. Factor in the traditional rush for the exit whenever the job market picks up, and one doesn't need Hercule Poirot to work out why the recruitment page is suddenly bang up to date.

As for when it will happen, your guess is as good as mine. Personally I'd wait for BA to start DEP recruitment and start the stopwatch . . .

Could anybody please comment on when or if the requirement for training to have been completed at a single FTO will go...for all us wannabes out there who didn't take that particular route! :)

Vone Rotate 5th Sep 2010 09:53

I must admit I was under the impression the requirement for one stop modular has been a requirement for a while now.

They have decided on what they are looking for and who can blame them! In the current climate they can afford to be. I'm sure they would get more than enough people who meet the stipulated requirement's.

Let's hope they open the doors soon!

One stop shop.

Pilots with airline experience have demonstrated they are capable of passing a type rating course and operating the aircraft out on the line. 200hr recruits on the other hand are a training risk. They have to pass the hurdles of groundschool, the simulator, base training and then line training, and the only way of differentiating one applicant from another is their CV and performance at assessment.

Many airlines choose to transfer that risk entirely to the trainee, and get them to pay for the type rating themselves. Flybe, to their great credit, are still prepared to fund the type rating, and simply bond people for 3 years. It is only natural that the recruitment department will do everything they can to reduce the risk of failure, and one way of doing this is to have an easily verifiable training record to hand. That is much easier if the applicant either went integrated or completed their modular CPL and IR at one school (note that ATPL theory exams and the PPL aren't part of the equation).

It's a system that seems to work well, and allows modular students as much chance of landing a job as integrated ones. I would imagine that the requirement would only be revisited if there was a serious shortage of suitable applicants, and that's not going to happen any time soon - if ever.

I applied to them about a year and a half ago just after completing my training (one stop modular) and got nothing. I since have gained TP experience.
Last week I mailed my updated CV to them. A day later on 01/09. I received this reply:

Thank you for your email. We are not recruiting at present and at this time I have no indication of when recruitment will start again. Following our recent news regarding our new jet fleet and Finnair, I am not aware of any immediate change to our recruitment needs. We have Holding Pools for any vacancies that occur in the near future. May I suggest you keep a check on our website as we will be posting regular recruitment updates.

Thank you for your interest in Flybe.

Kind regards,

Yep, they sure do. Not sure how many pools there are now. I applied just over 2 years ago from one of their recommended modular FTO's. We then went through the sim check and got the thumbs up but hey presto recession bit! Still waiting with no real indication of when things will start to move again

Its no great surprise at all that they are now officially stipulating >90% in ATPL writtens to be considered. Even two years ago, they were very selective with regard to applicants from affiliated modular FTO's. Bottom line is they wanted high % passes in the writtens and ideally first time / first series IR and CPL. Of course they may have been exceptions, but this is old news really.

As has been noted, in the dry baron wasteland that is the aviation employment market, they can afford to be choosey.

hobbit1983 5th Sep 2010 18:59

Thanks for your replies all - whilst the one stop shop requirement is a headache for me, I can see why it'd made sense from an employers perspective...can't blame them. Back to interview questions & technique study :ok:

Prophead 5th Sep 2010 19:46

I would imagine all these kinds of extra requirements will be dropped if or when there is any kind of recruitment boom. The sheer number of cv's that will be dropping through their letterbox will mean its a full time job for someone to sort through them. If they do look at all of them which I doubt.

FANS 5th Sep 2010 19:48

The website update is also to help the flotation. Previously it was referring to old information - e.g. 06 payscales, Norwich (Don't mention bases which couldn't work, when their growth forecast shows such high forecast growth). This looks clumsy when you're trying to get a decent price for an airline in the current climate.

Sark 7th Sep 2010 15:58

What sort of money does Flybe pay new recruits. Just qualified.

John Alcock 7th Sep 2010 16:33

Curiously enough it's all here on their website, under the section entitled "Pilot Payscales"

Don't forget Flybe have firm orders for 35 Embraer 170's to fuel expansion into Europe.

Historically, Flybe also have had high turnover with crews. They are currently wrestling with crew discontent over pay and lifestyle issues, see other threads, and if recruitment starts in earnest across the UK airlines expect to see a lot of movement again.

It's more a case of when it happens, not if. Unless the issues above are sorted of course.... But it'll always be a 'training' airline, and that's a shame.
