Have you seen that criteria on the job front?

What a :mad: discrimination??? Does your RT English level mentioned on your license doesn't mean anything for them? Apparently not. Whatever level 6 you have, you need to be Native English speaker!

A sadly famous German guy tried to play this game two generations ago and look what happened.

Not a long time ago, just during the first big recession in the thirties... strange, init?

Nothing against Native English speakers of course but honestly that sounds weird or may be not really in Borat's land...

100% spot on mate, totally ridiculous specially if you license endorsement says English proficient and the latter is issued by FAA. Nothing professional about this criteria pure prejudice. :=

If it's who I think it is, then they have a very good, and urgent reason, to require it - especially in the current market.

Not that this makes it right in any sense.

I usually fly with both Engilsh and Arabic native speakers...and their Engilsh is sure a lot better than my Arabic...:}

The Last I heard that English is the official language in Aviation. Sort of tough when you fly in some parts of the world and all you hear is Spanish, French, and others. You do not know traffic conflict and you'r situational awareness is not 100% because they are talking in none English language on an aviation transmitter. So if you are flying speak English on the radio. If you are on the ground who cares what you say.:)

I agree with you it's absolutely :yuk:, I have posted twice on this issue in the Air Astana section. My application was not accepted for the same reason even with level 6 English proficiency. From the explanation I got from the agents I understand where they are coming from but still :mad:!!

I am not as much annoyed by their requirement of native English speaking pilots only but more by the way they are limiting themselves by looking at your place of birth rather than the actual language proficiency as many Brits and Yanks (no offense!) can be difficult to understand with their various accents!

Given the current conditions we might be seeing more of this cherry picking attitudes...all legal apparently.

I have known non native English speakers with far better pronunciation and grammer than a lot of native ones, far easier on the ear than trying to decipher a thick Geordie accent.:E

Must say though that as a native speaker I can often understand a non native speaker better than another non native speaker can, if the standard is a bit marginal. I sometimes have to interperate for Chinese groundstaff trying to talk to South American captains.

I don't see no discrimination there. I wouldn't be able to work for Lufthansa, Iberia or Air France.

The word "NATIVE" is discrimiNATIVE my friends... Doesn't matter if you r fluent in English, or if your license shows level 6. They want you to be born in an English environment whatever your english level. That's unacceptable.

Be fluent in German, Spanish or even French and you will have a chance to get a job with one of the majors.

Once again this post is not a confrontation between natives and non natives and I would be horrified to see German Native, French Native, Italian Native adverts...

About 10 years ago, I applied to Lufthansa Cargo who were looking for crews for the MD11 (?) operation, based in Germany.
I applied and received a very nice letter informing me that they would review my application provided I could speak fluent/conversational (my wording) german.

NOT true imho. You could have an english speaking parent, live in South America and still be a native english speaker because that's what you learnt at home.

There is a difference between asking for language proficiency and looking for native speakers.

Within the EU one could argue that a job offer limited to native speakers is discriminatory UNLESS there is a plausible justification (e.g. language teachers, actors).

One has to admit, however, that for most "smaller" languages most people are pretty unlikely to have knowledge of the language unless they're native speakers. Who on earth would learn Finnish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Dutch, Greek, etc. as a second language? (Not meaning to debase these languages in any way but they're just not popular as second languages.)
