Crew Travel in Europe
In the US (I'm reliably informed) there is a fantastic system whereby crew can travel free with their own and other carriers when in uniform, holding ID etc...
Is there any reason that we cannot have the same benefit/perk here in Europe? |

It is still a common procedure at certain European airlines. At least in Italy and Europe , where yo will fly free on your airline and the other airlines, as long as they have agreements in place.
No uniform required, just show your ID at check in, sign the boarding card, and off you go to anywhere in the world for 0 $ ! Great. |

On who's insurance.
Can a contract be issued with no premium charged or contract issued? Or is the signing of the boarding card a disclaimer to pvivate liability? Just interested. Bored |
Insurance? Come on, you get what you pay for. When I used to commute, I'd plan I'd get on the third flight I tried. If I got on the first or second flight, so much the better.

Well saight : UK is a class on its own...... and for all jealous people who ask if I we ( Aircrew ) want to have a salary for that: NO but remember it was a common courtesy and practice that WE (Aircrew) help each other in any case, in the Sky, on the Ground and whenever needed. I see myself obligated to offer Jumpseats when there is any Crewmember stranded due to overbooking or something else.
If you are holding a Z-Fare ticket as backup you can eliminate the argument and ongoing hassle with some Groundstaff in West-Europe and UK about the Insurance and other excuses.... It is sometimes a joke to wait aftercheck in is closed until a STBY ticket is exchanged for a Boarding Pass - PAD travel means Passenger Available for Deboarding. If I get a boarding Pass to go to pass security checks, long cues, wait at the Gate until check in is closed the complete process is faster. In Paris I have to wait until check in is closed, pass the cues somehow and rush to the Gate to go on board almost in the last minute. I lived 4 years in France and I could not seen the benefit of that, TLS was better: Go to the Gate and wait until we assign your seat. If that flight was overbooked I knew that before, with STBY tickets you do not gamble, you try to get on and away, mostly Home..... Fly safe and land happy NG |
In Italy
I tell you what happen in Italy
With Alitalia, Alitalia Express, Airone, Meridiana, Eurofly, AirAlps, pilots can travel free without any ID tickets (only showing Airline budge and italian Crew Member certificate) because there is an agreement between these airlines. For any other airline employers, flight crew members or ground staff, they need ID tickets. They can also be accepted in the cabin jump seat (only in cabin) if captain accept to do so. If there is not agreement, there is not travel insurance. Ciao Stef |
What a shame one of the easiest perks to provide for our hard working crews is destroyed by bureaucracy and rules. What a load of BS...

It usually works in Spain on all airlines BUT normally they only take people from other airlines that have the same procedure.
This was a long battle that the pilots had in their companies, (Iberia as the main contributer) and they got it written in their OM. So you just have to show up at the airplane with your company ID and licence and ask the captain to go as an Extracrew, and the captain then decides. Your name and ID is written on the loadsheet and then you have full insurence and can go with them. Normally they know which airlines do the same favor for them... The only thing you have to do in other countrys is fight so they put it in the OM and if all of you do it we can have this privilege all around Europe and be a united pilot group.:}:}:} E. Mach |

Oh come on, boys and girls, anyone even remotely familiar with the UK these days would know that Gordon Brown would be spinning in his coffin at the thought that public enemy no.1 in terms of aviation security (ie aircrew) could:
1) Be allowed anywhere near a flightdeck 2) Get a free perk without paying tax for the benefit in kind We'd all be locked up quicker than a demonstrator at a Labour Party Conference:} |

It's not right to be honest...
Rail workers travel for free on their network, Bus drivers travel for free on their network, Tube workers on their network, Why not us it really isn't very good, I was gonna say maybe it is time that we talked to the likes of Balpa but then i remembered BA already has staff travel so that'll get us no where. Life could be so much easier for so many more people with a little co-operation and common sense. |
