Life insurance for flight crew that covers mortgages
 

Morning everyone.

I apologise in advance for posting on the professional part of the forum before I'm finished with my training, however I need to plan in advance on this one.

My wife and I have just bought our first house together and have discovered that the life insurance/critical illness cover offered by our Building Society has been bumped up considerably by my status as a pilot in training.

Anyway, before we buy the cover on offer, could anyone suggest institutions more sympathetic to pilots? What is the general situation once I'm employed in the industry? Do employers offer schemes? What about BALPA or IPA?

My policy states you must notify us "if you are engaged in extreme sports or hobbies". Which pilot truly feels the above applies to them?

Superpilot obviously didn't feel able to give one, most of your colleagues distance ourselves from that response.

Talk first to your lender, then Balpa/Ipa or who ever you use to protect your position.

After that, if you need to talk to all of us, except maybe Superpilot, who I suspect may not so super after all.

It would be a good palce to compare deals (as we all want the best)

The problem with not disclosing you are a pilot, is when you come to claim, the insurance company has a great get out clause, doooh !

So come on who has found the best deal and with which company (is Balpa worth it)

Just got new mortgage and with it new life insurance. Had to fill out one more form than my wife who does not fly but had no probs with legal and General. Previously told the old insurer of my change of occupation and they said it was no problem. That was Norwich Union. As for costs. Mortgage is £215,000 Life insurance without critical illness is £16 per month. I'm 31 and don't smoke. Hope that helps

Joint life cover with wife for £100k (Age 39 & 38), valid till age 60, £17.50/mth.

Heard Scottish Provident pretty good for critical illness. Used by doctors who understand the big words and get out clauses.

38 student pilot, smoker, £250k life insurance 25 yrs no critical illness, £41pm with Norwich Union.

I suppose being a pilot in training, the hours building could be seen as recreational flying or sports flying.

Anybody with a Halifax Mortgage can get good cover combined critical illness and life cover regardless of your occupation. And yes I was suspicious and they confirmed no probs for pilots.

Its with Halifax only for Halifax mortgagees though

I just "topped up" another 250K over 20 years as Mme Clueless wants a bigger house and mortgage which means I will have to keep going a little longer than planned,Im 45 been flying 25 years for 45 pounds/month.The cover is with Friends Prov-and because I had been to the cardiologist 3 times in 25 years for standard stuff whilst overseas they wanted a Drs report & blood test which my regular AME (Dr Perry-excellent chap) did for me at my last medical.

Went through"insurance surgery" up north near Macclesfield,very helpful people.Hannah or Louise?They will do the form on the phone and direct you to the best cover /price.

Be honest on the form, as said earlier,these insurance types are in the same social group as traffic wardens and second hand car salesmen they will pull out your file and go through it with a fine tooth comb should the worst happen.Trust me-it happened to a friend some years ago.Disgraceful episode in UK insurance.
