Flying for KAL?
 

Hello, Is there anyone out there that has first hand experience flying for KAL. An offer may come my way (777 Capt), so naturally I am curious as to what the working conditions, flying patterns, rostering and over all treatment of ex-pats.

I have been with KAL for 8 months now and I'm glad to be here. DH to and from your elected base is in first class and on days on. I have 14 days off this month. I elected SEA as my base and there is a new push to get ex-pats in and out if their base more frequently. This month I will be at my base twice which will allow me to spend 2 additional nights at home.
The crew members have been very good to me and I think they realize that in order to continue to expand they will need more ex-pats.
The training is done with Alteon and I have found them to be very good with mostly retired ex-pat pilots from many international airlines. I just took a 6 month check and was delighted to see that we actually spent time training on the first day and not just ticking off boxes.
Initial training was a long process, for me it was 11 weeks with only one 11 day break between ground school and simulator training.
When in Incheon we stay at the Hyatt at the airport, very nice hotel and the staff is great. We get a 50% deal in the restaurant and pretty good deal on laundry which is returned normally with in 4 hours.
I guess it's a matter of preception as far as it being a good place to work but for me KAL is much better than where I came from.

Which agency did you use, and would you recommend them to others? I'm in the process of applying and I'm trying to get any info that I can. CCL aviation is accepting apps and scheduling interviews for August. I take it you're on the 747. Any idea how life is on the 777 or 737? How was the interview and sim check?

I am with CCL and I'm happy with them. They pay on time and answer any question you have normally with in 24 hours. The interview is straight forward I think what the are looking for is how well you will fit in with the KAL way of doing things. One of the questions I was asked was how would I feel if I had a mx issue and the FO talked with mx control. The sim check was straight forward as well. One thing to remember is that they are looking for stable approaches by 1000' haa. On the 400 check I did the vor to 33R using vnav. The wx is set to where you will break out at 1500 feet but your high on the papi so you need to get down on the papi but not get a sink rate call. As I recall 1500 fpm was plenty but do not delay once you pick up the papi. I used the procedures and QRH of the airline I was flying at at the time which they said was fine.

Life on the 777 is about the same as the 400 but I am not sure about the 737 because that fleet is mainly domestic and I'm not sure what there trips are like.

I'm a B767 captain for a major US airline. I gross about $14K/mnth. I spent about six years in the right seat of the B777. Would KAL hire me into a B777 left seat and what gross pay could I expect?

Yes KAL will consider you for their widebody captain. Any widebody captain time is what they require.... not necessarily the 777 or 744 type rating, but still a widebody left seat.

Over 10,000 on single isle will they look at you for 777?

Much to my dismay, No they won't look at you with 10K of narrowbody left seat time. Apparently you must have some type of PIC in a heavy.

My app is in but I would like opinions if they will consider. I have over 5000 wide body PIC (767, 777), 777 type (not current) but I have been out of wide body flying for two years. I was TRE/TRI qulifed on 767 and 777. I am 56.5 years. I am currently flying a business jet.
