Thomsonfly basing
 

Apologies if this is elsewhere but I wasn't sure if the direct entry basing was the same as from thomsonfly's mentored scheme at Flight Training Europe? I have applied to this scheme and obviously if I get through then I don't care where I'm based initially! But eventually I would be after a scottish base (preferably glasgow). Can anyone tell me what the likelyhood of this is? When joining as a low hours SO, do you have a fixed base for a period of time? Thanks :)

Very unlikely at the moment.

If you are sucessful in completing the CPL/IR and Tfly offer you a job it will be on the same basis as everyone else as far as I know - you will fill in a basing preference form and you will get the base you want that has a vacancy. There is no fixed time at a base, you can move as quickly as you like as long as there is a vacancy for you to fill.

thanks for the replies. I thought there may be a fixed base for a period of time. I know flybe give you a fixed base for 3 years - thats what prompted my question!

So when it comes to asking for a different base, I'm guessing you have to wait for someone to leave, or for a new route to be created? Also guessing this doesn't happen all that often.

How long to get LGW for Tfly
 

I'd like to apply to Tfly, as an SO. I've got the 757 rating and time on type, but it'll be a year or two before I get the 1500 hours for an FO application at the current rate.
As I'm a mid life career changer (mid 30's) I have other responsibilities which tie me to the south east (kids, wife career etc). I'm currently flying out of LGW and it suits me very well.
I know i'm unlikely to get LGW as a base initially, and I know the question is akin to "how long is a piece of string". But what sort of time range is it likely that I could get to LGW - month, 6 months, year, 10 years?
what is likely to be an initial base? Luton is good for me. I understand STN is closing.
What is the likelyhood of being able to commute if I get somewhere miles away for a while?
I've done alot of reasearch and really would like to apply to TFly and make it work, as they are my first choice of career airline, but I'm also mindful that I'm not a free spirit 20 year old any more and have other responsibilities too.
Also any ideas, rumours etc on what the merger is going to do to T's and C's and basing?

when i joined 18 months ago we were all based at DSA but whilt in line training "wiz ze germans" as one captain likes to say, there was a base bid and we all put what we wanted and gaind the bases of our choice. We had been in the company less than six months and based where we wanted.
Right time and place I spose. You never know.

In the past, people have generally ended up where they want to be. As some of the above postings indicate, this may take a little time however. Hope that helps.

I also enquired about a LGW base when at Stage 1 assessment and was told the wait could be 12 to 18 months! However they did also say they do their best to get you where to want to be as quick as possible.

So is 12-18 months considered a long time? I would happily wait that length of time for a glasgow base!!

Sorry to ask yet another question... but do most airlines (thomsonfly specifically) state that you must live a certain distance from your base? So you can get there on standby days? Is this usually 30 mins, an hour, 2 hours..? Thanks :)

Tfly standby is to leave home within 60 minutes of callout. May be able to live 90 minutes with permission of fleet manager.

Our standbys are generally in blocks of 4 days, from 0300-0800. If you do live along way away, you could always find somewhere closer for those days (B&B, services etc)

Civil pilot, I think the requirement actually is to live within 60 minutes from your base, and leave within 30 minutes from callout. This therefore means 90 minutes from the call to report. An extension to the distance you live from base may be granted, this would be to a max of 90 minutes, plus the 30 minutes to leave the house, bringing the total to 120 minutes from callout to report.
