Job Overseas.
 

Hi guys im new to this forum.My first post on pprune.Im a FO for A320 with 3000 TT.It has been a long time dream for me to work and live in overseas countries like europe,us,canada,aus,etc.I happen to meet an ex air france A321 capt a few days back.According to him it is almost impossible for a asian to get a airline job in countries like aus,uk,us,canada,fance,etc even if you are type rated and have sufficient hours.I have several of my friends who have moved to carriers like korean air,eva air,china airlines,air hong kong,cathay,emirates,etihad,jet airways and singapore airlines.But so far I have not heard of any asian getting into carries like qantas,british airways,virgin atlantic,klm,lufthansa or even easy jet or ryan air.(CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG).I would like to know several information......

1.Is it really impossible for asians to get a airline job in the countries i mentioned?
2.If it is true,why is it so?
3.what is the standard of living of pilots in these countries?

Thats all for now.I would like ask for an advanced APOLOGY if I have in anyway ANNOYED anyone on this forum through my post.THANK YOU,HAPPY FLYING:)

Short answer.
You need a visa with a right to abode and work for those countries.
No visa = no chance of employment.
You'd need to check each country's immigration policy to see how to get a visa.

That's quite a claim, and almost certainly completely wrong. You only have right to live and work in your country or countries of natonality - i.e. you have a passport for those countries. In some countries, you may have residence and work rights if your parents are from that country. Most countries have quite strict criteria for who can live and work in their territory. You need to research this.

As an European, do i have the "right" to live and work in Malaysia? I believe the answer is NO, unless a Malaysian company sponsors me for the visa. Its the same in Europe, no visa = no right to work. Sorry, but the answer to your question hasnt got anything to do with your ethnic background, but your visa eligibility.

Hi guys you are right,and sorry I was wrong.Yup I have a passport that gives me the the chance to gain access into any country except for isael.But I dont have a working visa.Anyway I have consulted with the immigration department of MALAYSIA and they have told me that a working visa can be arranged within 7 days.So getting the visa is not much of a problem.What Im thinking is what are the chances of getting a job in europe expecially uk,aus,us,canada.Are there asians working in these countries as pilots in major carriers?What are the living standard of pilots in those countries?thank you

There are pilots from all ethnic backgrounds working in the US and European major carriers, including many of asian descent.

You seem to be missing the point that people are trying to make. Your eligibility to work for these carriers matters not one iota what your ethnic heritage is but depends on your rights of citizenship/residency etc.

The MALAYSIAN immigration department may well be able to offer a work permit to an alien wishing to work within Malaysia. However, I doubt they are able to grant you permission to live and work within US/AUS/Europe within 7 days. You will need to consult the immigration department of those countries you intend to work in for full details.

Also, bear in mind that if you wish to fly in these countries you will also need to hold a licence acceptable to their aviation authorities. This may entail a costly conversion from (I assume) your Malaysian licence.

If you wish to work outside Malaysia, you will have to satisfy the immigration and aviation departments of the country you wish to work in, not those of Malaysia. The EU, Australia and the USA (for example) do not issue work permits or residence visas easily. You cannot just rock up to an airline in your country of choice and ask for a job! The fact that you have a passport that allows you to travel is irrelevent. You must talk to the embassy or high commission of the country or countries you are aiming at. I suspect you will be somewhat dismayed at what you find.

Forget the US. Two friends, each of whom are married to US citizens, have been trying for over 4 years to get "Green cards". Apparently since 9/11, anyone applying for a green card who has employment history as a pilot is considered very suspect. One of these guys (a Canadian) spent over US$15k before giving up and returning to Canada.

From what I can see, the US is still suffering the after-effects of 9/11 in the airline industry, and lots of US pilots are seeking opportunities in Asia.

You want to EMIGRATE from Malasia, not IMMIGRATE TO Malasia.

yup I have carriers like Etihad and Emirates in my mind.I have a couple of my friends who are in the sand pit now and they seem to be happy and satisfied with their job over there.But again it is my next option.As wat i mentioned in my previous post it has been my dream to work and live overseas expecially UK.What do you think?Is it possible?Thank You for your feedback

I'm sorry but I find my credibility levels stretched to breaking point, when someone claiming to have multiple years experience on big jets and all the associated higher-than-average educational standards that go with it, has clearly no grasp of the basic idea, that governments of desirable countries choose to place restrictions on the migration of labour forces, known as 'work visas'. It's sort of global common knowledge even amongst sub saharan peasants isn't it?

Those people in Toulouse and Hamburg sure build `em so that ANYONE could fly them.

Even easier to fly it on MSFlightSim when you're about 19! I came to the conclusion things were 'not quite as they appeared' too. Nobody can be that naive, especially with 4 years flying big(ger) ones!

Your Solution.
 

The solution to your problem involves getting "sponsored" by an employer in the country to whick you want to work. The Europeans till recently have not been willing to take US citizens as pilots due to the lack of "right to work" in the EU (i.e. being a citizen or married to a citizen in one of the participating countries). Ryan Air in Ireland has started to sponsor US citizens with a right to work visa and six month waivers for their JAR license (they are looking for 737 ng rated guys). I have a friend from my defunct major US carrier helping furloughed pilots get on at Ryan and has himself become a check airman in a very sort time. From my research there are lots of airbus jobs world wide that are not being filled for lack of pilots wanting to go fly in third world nations. Try some of the websites that cater to crew management services or job listings, i.e. Rishworth, PARCaviation.com,flightglobal.com, flightdeckrecruitment.com. They list jobs all over the world and many air bus jobs. Additional crew management companies I've seen, have listed jobs on avianation.com and climbto350.com; both of which list primarily US based jobs, but often have jobs listed by international crew management companies. Once you've found a job that you might have skills for, apply for it and push for right to work sponsorship if you need it. Even some of the American companies are sponsoring foriegn born pilots when they "need" someone.

I think you are raising false hopes in that post. It's not the shortage of jobs, it's the sheer impossibility of the type of immigration this guy is after. i find it difficult to believe what you are saying about US employers 'sponsoring' immigrant pilots! Dream on! It's not the job vacancies that are the problem, it's getting the all important Green Card, then being able to actually make use of it to get a job. I think you have no idea the difficulty with the US Immigration Service foreigners have, so all all the optimistic stuff you said about getting employment is totally wrong and superfluous anyway. That is why Europe has barriers up as well, but the biggest barrier of them all is around the US!

Forget about US companies. You do need a US passport to apply for 99% of the companies. Some of then are more honost about it and tell you the way it is and others just give you the run-around. You can throw that equal opportunity out of the window!!!
