I fully agree Quattro - Money alone will not get you through unless you really have the determination, skill and belief. I have seen people run into problems whilst flight training and just throw more money at it thinking that will solve the problem - However the end result remained the same, they never got through because they didn't have the heart!

I do agree that it doesn't matter if daddy has paid for your course or not. For me taking a 400 ton jet across the planet still takes my breath away and I am thankful for this everytime I go flying. But just because I feel privileged for being in this position does not mean that I will accept a constant erosion of conditions.

Cheekycapt, to suggest that all new guys joining airlines have rich daddies is not true. Some do actually work hard and save for years, sell the house and wife etc before embarking on their goal..

You'll find that it takes more than money determination and luck, it also take an enormous amount of Ability and Skill. I trained with guys five years ago who had money and determination but weren't good enough to cut it in an airline environment and couldn't pass airline assessment, so think on..

People have good and bad days. If you think about it, people who have been flying for years have seen huge changes in the industry and in T's + C's in all companies, this in itself is enough to make even the most positive moan from time to time. Walk in to any hospital and try and tell me that if you spoke to a few very busy doctors who trained for 7 years they too don't ever moan about being overworked and tired?? It happens in all jobs not just ours..

I am a Wanabee and a mere PPL and would like all current pilots to continue moaning. At the end of the day the more they moan the more chance there is of us future pilots having good T&C's! If they sat back and let the airlines cut wages/pensions/benfits then there will be nothing in 10 years. So please, carry on moaning!

Do you really think airline management take any notice of whinging pprune pilots?
Perhaps not directly, although this forum is widely read by management. However, the ability to alert potential recruits of conditions at companies is a priceless service. The more you know the stronger a position you are in. I believe the many warnings about Ryanair are partially responsible for the current, and hopefully long extended, pilot crisis that ryanair is in, which for example has forced them to drop the SSTR farce for suitable applicants (the actual value of the new system is however open to debate, and is for another thread).

Delighted to see this thread is getting a good bit of attention ! I myself do not have a rich daddy and I have spent the last 3 yrs working at Dublin Airport saving up to pay for my Training ! I know 2 guys whose parents have paid up to €150,000 for them to get trained and get a type rating on a B737-800 with Ryanair ! They are both First Officers with Ryanair and must be the greatest moaners of all time ! I know they are not treated the best but they dont seem to appreciate one bit their jobs ! Why I think so is because they got it handed to them on a plate ! I admire all they hard working guys out there who worked very hard to save up and pay for their training !

Couldnt agree more cheekycapt! You've hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

cavortingcheetah 4th May 2006 17:54

:hmm:

I've met some hard working pilots out there who positively bask in the delights of their penury.
Have you a problem with the youngster whose father gives him a Ferrari?
Only if he's a podophthalmate, methinks!
It's not the economics stupid, it's the man!:p

klink 6th May 2006 17:30

These days I almost have to start whispering when I say I paid for my rating, but can be proud when I at least can claim that I carry the loan on my own back, and not supported by well-off parents.
You guys are funny.
Never judge a person by his appearance.
CRM mistake number one.
Carry on guys.:yuk:

Krikies, MG! If I'd known that I could have sold just the wife instead....????

Maybe I should have jettisoned her well before I started earning! Would have saved a bundle! A.I.D.S. (aviation induced divorce syndrome) kills!
