hello i got a invite too.

i am not sure what the package is because i do not fly 757 either and was wondering if they will pay for type rating etc. what do you fly at moment?

Jet2 6th Oct 2005 22:41

gtaflyer

For your info, unfortunately Jet2 don't pay for the type ratings on the 737 or 757.

fade to grey 7th Oct 2005 07:27

I am still trying to work out just exactly where the 75 fits into low cost......oh and I don't know if I like the sound of this bunch from what has been said recently
I ain't freezing my balls off so they save a little APU time...!

tell me more i want to know all the gen on J2 good and bad.

Does anyone know what the 757 salaries are for SFO with jet2 and do they have staff travel through IATA. Whats the selection tests and interview like?

fade to grey 8th Oct 2005 10:05

Gta,
do a search...there have been many threads about jet2 recently, pay I can't recall it was about 60 for P1 and 38 P2

Wing Commander Fowler 11th Oct 2005 06:52

Did the selection tests cuppla years ago - have a big company attitude to selection with all the written tests and the like. Seem like a nice bunch of guys - professional too IMHO.

I would suggest that because Jet2 are offering 757 positions to none type rated people you can answer a lot of your own questions. They can't attract type rated people because the package isn't quite there and the salaries in no way make up for the lack of everything else.
Channel Express (which own Jet2) has an awful man managment reputation (historically) which it is finding it very difficult to distance itself from. This further makes people nervous of joining them.
Jet2 offers a good opportunity into the jet market but its terms and conditions are years behind most other UK operators.

Good luck with what you decide to do.

gtaflyer 13th Oct 2005 15:44

thanks sfd fo reply

i am told that for non type rated people they ask you to pay for the type rating, do you happen to know how they work this? Also what is the salary at start?

thanks

Do not be fooled,

From what I have heard

Jet2 pay conditions are probably the worst in the uk jet industry

Contract written that makes it almost impossible to leave

General setup run like a small cargo outfit, haven't got to grips with the commercial realities of what they are trying to achieve

Aircraft falling apart

People had enough and beginning to go

rudolf 14th Oct 2005 07:13

Why has everyone got a downer on Jet2.

Don't be put off by the sentiments of a few people with sour grapes.

Its not perfect but tell me a company that is!

No Jet Too Knackered.......

CAVEAT EMPTOR

Currently 14 pilots out of around 150 on the resignation list.

Two B737 fleet TRE's have resigned in last 2 months.

The Chief Training Captain resigned due to 'issues' 2 weeks ago.

The Flight Safety Officer (who had been with the company 7 years) resigned 2 months ago after disagreements with the Group Safety Officer- a mate of PM. ( I dare not publish the allegations)

A300 pilot force given no oppertunity to move to B737/757 without paying up and signing new contracts. Some pilots with over 15 years service with the company! (But at least they got a better deal than the poor lads on the F27 at Christmas)

PM has taken senior staff off the B737 to crew the B757 due to lack of applicants - due entirely to poor pay & conditions. This has caused mayhem on the B737. There are now only now 4 TRE's remaining on the B737 fleet (20 Aircraft) and that includes the Flight Ops Director.

Crew ratio well under 4.0.

A not untypical roster: 6 on 2 off 6 on 3 off 7 on 2 off 2 on etc.... In other words you cant plan anything. Contract also says that the company can cancel a day of if they give you 2 days notice.

Roster stability non existant - Many pilots in the resignation pool are simply not turning up for work. Its a four month notice period with a 10,000 UK Sterling penalty PER MONTH if you break your notice period! - Easier to go sick!!

Moral, needless to say, in tatters.

B737's in poor state with many 'yellow stickers' - Engineering resources split to now include B757's.

Oh.... and recent directive from B737 Fleet Manger instructing pilots not to make posts on PPRUNE!!

Aye, that will be right......

For those wishing to know about how the whole type rating works, here it is in basic terms.

If they think you need a bit of polishing up you will have to pay £3000 for an advanced handling course. Then you will have to pay £17000 for your type rating. Once you have passed your conversion and have a stamp in your licence then you become an employee of jet2/ Channel Express.

You will then be paided back the money you invested over 3 years, tax free ontop of your salary, after the 3 years you still get that money but it is taxed!

However you are on a reduced salary compared to type rated pilots, so you are really paying for it.

Dont think the idea is too bad if its your 1st jet job.

Hope this helps

screw fix diret 16th Oct 2005 16:15

I don't have any sour grapes as I've never worked for Jet2. I did have a serious look at it earlier in the year and decided the whole employment package was way to one sided. All the risk on my side and no risk whatsoever on thier side. (especially having a £5000 bond even if you are type rated)
Bear in mind I do have a job. If I didn't then the whole thing takes on a different perspective.
Have a look at ppjn for employment terms. I don't know how up to date it is but it might further your investigations.
There is also an extensive discussion in this forum entitled "Jet2 an honest and uncensored debate..." or something along those lines that might give you a feeling for what is going on. Be aware that a 757 has a far greater endurance than a 737 and therefore you can expect to have a longer and therefore more unsociable day to day existance than what some might suggest at Jet2.

But at the end of the day, at least you're not having to fly an Airbus!! every cloud and all that.

gtaflyer 17th Oct 2005 05:52

thanks for the info on jet

i am not sure what the salary is if you have to pay for the training yourself i thought it was 20k something on top of 17k + 3k for training? you are right in that it is heavily one sided risk.

A330 Biggles 17th Oct 2005 10:32

Ive heard from a number of Non - Type rated FO's (low hours) that its a fantastic oppertunity. Even with teh Bond their taking home 25 - 30K a yr after tax.

Great if your looking for your 1st Jet job! They didnt seem to have a problem with moral and only spoke highly of Jet2.
