Life at Monarch
 
Hi,

I have just been offered a position with Monarch on the airbus. Would any of you Monarch guys care to comment on life at Monarch.

What do you like and dislike?

I have been reading conflicting reports on how long it takes to get on the A330. Reports stating that people are being forced onto A330, or reports saying at least 5 years cos its so popular.

Can't wait to start.

May I politely suggest that you take up your rant with someone who deserves it/ and cares, so the poor lad can get an answer to his harmless question.

Some people want a job they love, and aren't so bothered about the pay, and anyhooo, how much do you want for twiddling a few nobs and drinking tea? V1, Rotate, gear up , pass the crossword?

Cruise Pilot hope this helps from one inside,

The A330 is crewed by seniority from the 320/321 fleet and up to now has been purely voluntary, as an excess number of people wanted to go on it. FO's going onto the 330 last year had been FO's on the 320/321's for six plus years but with recent proposed commands and expansion, 330 FO's are leaving the 320/321/330 fleet to become 320/321 Captains. As a result of the promotions new 330 FO's from the 320/321 fleet were required. As I understand it there has been a shortfall of highly experienced FBW FO's (ie. not the CTC cadets who were made permanent last November) who wanted to take up the voluntary vacancies and thus reverse seniority has been used to fill the remaining 330 FO vacancies by non volunteers who have been in the company for several years.

Your lifestyle depends so much on your base, type and seniority at Monarch.

The comments of Easy Glider seem perfectly reasonable to me.

When I look at the profile of Shermanator, I find it disturbing to see that an ATC person could be so full of resentment for pilots.

If you read closely, I was actually sticking up for Cruise Pilot, as I thought Easy Rider was being particularly obnoxious and unhelpful.

As has been said, it's supposed to be a useful website.

As for resentment for pilots, that's wrong too, it's called banter.

I'd expect the same back and would know how to take it, 2 of my best friends fly for the Speedbird and the Mytravel, and we are actually able to take the pi$$ out of each other.

No noses supposed to be put out of joint, the lad got his answers, end of thread.

I don't like traffic wardens though. Start me a thread!!

Easy Glider,

I am very much aware of the T&C's at Monarch. They are a lot better than my current employer even though I am currently flying a jet.

I am of the opinion if I don't accept now someone else will.
A while ago I turned down Easyjet as I was offered a job elsewhere.
Gulf War II put an end to that. Now look at Easyjet T&C's. A LOT worse compared to when I was offered the job.
I have been trying to get into Monarch for years, and there is no-way that I am gonna turn this chance down.

Alloy, thanks for your reply, makes things a lot clearer. A possible long wait for the 330 still hasn't put me off. Still looking forward to it.
I think even with the new scale its still possible to have a good laugh with the crew and enjoy the job.

Looks like Cruise is well aware of the T&C and the charter/IT lifestyle. I, for one, am happy that he has finally joined the airline of his choice - good job. And let's face it - nobody's gonna get rich in this business.... Hopefully wages will increase in time but I wouldn't bet on it...

Comments by Longstay and others are not helpful and actually seem very arrogant and condescending. Wages/benefits aside, you could at least congratulate the guy for reaching his goal...

In my current outfit it is mainly day work. However things do change come the summer months. Night charters being one of them. Not my favourite shift but certainly better than a 4 sector early.

One looked at the roster and saw a night Palma. No worries until on further inspection you see that you have to sit in Palma for 5 hours and try to sleep on a/c. That was a little too much for me.
I definitely don't mind working through the night, but not with a turn around like that only to be rudely woken up by dispatcher.
So back to blighty in the morning. Back at the airport again that night to do it all over again.


I take it that flights with Monarch won't be like that. Time will only tell how I cope with night Tenerifes and Larnaca.

Irregardless of low wages/benefits, you could do a lot worse than flying the Airbus for Monarch... The wage/benefits trend is going down at all airlines.

Beyond Thomsonfly, I can't think of many operations that are seeing stable or pay/benefits increases... Certainly BA is getting a lot worse and upgrade time there is super-long.

Quality of life, is the driving force behind many people joining Monarch..after 3 earlies, 3 lates and most nights living out of a suitcase, Monarch life looks quite good and the pakage although not what it was is still a fair industry rate.;)
