Kalitta

Rumor has it that Kalitta Air is about to pick up seven more Classic freighters from Polar Air.

Anyone?:}

Intruder 14th Mar 2004 23:32

Reasonable rumor...

Polar is about to give several airplanes back to the lessors as a result of the bankruptcy. Those lessors will want to lease them to someone else. Kalitta has the $$...

Bad news for Polar, though... Kalitta and their Pacific Air Cargo (Ned Wallace) partner are going head to head against Polar in the Pacific region, and more competition will likely reduce Polar's load factors even more...

Beaver Driver 15th Mar 2004 02:09

....ahhhhh Intruder

Try to keep up will-ya.

The mighty economist that sits sideways for Polar has told us in no uncertain terms that it is yield that counts, not load factor.

So really all the Polaroids have to do is up the price a little and they will be able to compete with Kallitta and Ned Wallace on those Pacific runs.

micro-burst 16th Mar 2004 20:51

Two more B-747's that I know of at the present. I might add it would be difficult for any carrier to undercut Kalitta's costs.

Taikonaut 17th Mar 2004 00:14

Micro, I agree. All of the Kalitta's a/c are bought and paid for...read no bank payments, zero, zip. How would Polar or Atlas compete with that? Not to mention their own 747 maintainace facility in Oskoda.

Heard that they will start hiring again soon.:E

Any recent news?

Has anyone heard any recent news on them? New airplanes or stuff like that? I've heard they are interviewing for some First Officers FO and appropiate numbers of FEs.

In other Kalitta news, I found this:

Kalitta Air Selects CMC Electronics For B747 Cockpit Avionics Upgrade Program

Looks like they are updating their existing B747s with FMSs and EFIS. They mention 14 other carriers have updated with B747s with it. Anyone know who's using it?

Just talked to an old FE friend of mine and he said when he spoke to the people at Kalitta, the implied they were not going to hire PFE's. They are planning on going to a 2nd officer program, ie. pilot FE's. Could he be looking into the future and the -400's?

Taikonaut 28th Apr 2004 20:12

Connie will buy anything if it's the right price. :E

Zoner 29th Apr 2004 05:21

Over the last few years what the PFE is allowed to do and sign off has been limited by the Feds. This trend may continue which would do away with advantage of being a PFE. Second Officers are cheaper.

Kalitta Air

Zoner said but true. I understand Kalitta carries flight mech. on just about all their flights. Thus a PFE isn't really necessary. Regretable, but the demise of the PFE started in the 1960's with Eastern, TWA, National, PAA, and Northwest Airlines, for those of you that can remember that far back. All but one carrier has meet its demise. I guess somedays you have to accept the fact you are the Pigeon and somedays you are the statue.:ugh:

Taikonaut 29th Apr 2004 17:55

The demise of PFE started way back in 1965 when they Douglas rolled out the first DC-9. Weighing in at 79,999 lbs, it just squeaked under the FAA >80,000 lb/ FE requirement rule.

No doubt, the third set of eyes have been valuable and has proven itself many times. Many of the accidents could have been averted if there was a third guy on board. They also make a great tie-breaker in the cockpit.

As far as SO goes, great as a heavy crew on a two man cockpit aircraft but on the a/c that requires FE, they tend to get "seat distraction".

Who do Kallita mainly fly for. Saw 3 747s in AMS the other day so they must move a lot of stuff !

PFEs

I just started class there. For those who are interested, it was 12 FOs and 6 PFEs. The PFEs are all furloughed Kitty Hawk Intl'l guys, who are being recalled via their contract. The majority of the FOs in the class had either 747 time or other heavy time.

Apparently, all the pilots found jobs, while the PFEs are returning. As I understand it, there are enough PFEs on the recall list to cover the rest of the hiring this year. I haven't heard anything about PFE vs 2nd officer.

They do carry a flight mechanic on board.

I'm in class right now and there are going to be 5 more upgrade classes with at least 10 per class this year. (I assume 5 FO/FE newhires as well) Currently there are only 51 FOs online so its very very likely that a few guys in my class will be CPTs by the end of 2005. With attrition and a little luck, maybe all of us...

747Fr8DOG 20th Jan 2005 14:00

Actually Norm Gage might be better hes the assistant chief pilot. Heath is the Director of Safety, he does the interviews with Dick, the CP.

A little off the current thread but I see the Australian HeavyLift Cargo Airlines Pty Ltd (heavylifted in livery but a dubious conx. with UK company other than grabbing the Belfast ) have applied for routes Australia-Shanghai-Amsterdam-USA-Australia using Kalitta B742F and sighting Ned Wallace and Connie Kalitta as underwriting the base operations.
If they could just get Mr. Kalita name correct on the application, heavylift your game SPAM (South Pacific Airmotive) you need to compete heavily with QF and MP and the others on these routes. You may view the application on www.iasc.gov.au/iasccurr.aspx the SPAM link is also interesting reading.
